North Korean forces battered a three mile dent in UN lines south of the 38th parallel in rugged east Korea. The Eighth Army spokesman said the attack is now contained after counterattacks. General Ridgway expressed confidence in UN success as skirmishing continued along the front.
Washington reports the government slashed private loan funds by freezing 2 billion dollars in credit and moving to tighter economic controls for defense. The ESA will open 13 regional offices to handle wage problems as the NPA assumes sole rubber import and distribution, tightening national control. Continued on page 4 column 3.
Washington December 29 AP There were no tears. Robert Smith 20 first quadruple amputee of Korea War spoke greeting to his mother Clara Smith in Walter Reed Hospital. He moved remaining arm and asked about home while Mrs Smith traveled from Middleburg Pennsylvania to Washington. She supported herself to visit and wondered who would care for the house and pay for her stay.
Atlanta December 29 AP Miss Leona Golde 22 a Delta Airlines stewardess perished when a house near the Atlanta airport was destroyed by fire. Police say they were driven back by heat and flames while trying to enter. Three other Delta employees occupied the house but were away. Golde formerly lived in Tonawanda New York she joined Delta in 1948 and became a stewardess in 1949.
Sen Humphrey urges a joint Senate House watchdog committee to closely monitor the new independent civil defense administration. He says early in January a resolution will be introduced to form the panel, aiming to curb potential abuse of unprecedented peacetime powers.
President Truman signed legislation providing 38 million dollars in additional food aid to drought hit Yugoslavia. The fund brings U S aid to about 69 million dollars for the Balkan nation, which is Communist ruled and at odds with Russia. Congress will not need new appropriations for the program.
Detroit reports the auto industry will cut production 20 to 30 percent in early 1940s as national emergency demands curtail use of critical materials. Major plants nationwide announce layoffs totaling thousands as GM Packard Ford and Studebaker reduce daily output and idle workers while shifting toward defense production.

Two hundred pounds of million year old cocktail ice from Mendenhall glacier near Juneau Alaska was sent to the Explorers Club annual banquet at the Roosevelt Hotel in New York. Maynard Miller, a member and director of the Juneau Icecap project, arranged the shipment. The block was placed on a Pan American Plane to Seattle then to New York via United Airlines for Eastward delivery.
The Associated Press reports the severe ice storm threat in North Georgia diminished as temperatures rose. The weather office forecasts mostly cloudy skies and more rain with no freezing. State Patrol says roads are open and bridges are sanded. motorists should watch for fallen limbs in wooded areas.
