In Chicago federal Judge Walter Co Lindley rejected a defense bid to quash four liquor indictments tied to George Morris. The motion argued the 18th Amendment was invalid since ratification bypassed constitutional conventions. Lindley ruled federal power derives from the Constitution and the amendment merely regulates intoxicating liquor.
Paris December 19 Parliament adjourned until January 13 leaving Theodore Steeg as Premier with his ministry. The government survived a 7 vote confidence margin but opposition threatens to topple it when sessions resume, making a government ouster likely.
Memphis reports that the wife of federal judge Harry Anderson testified before a House committee probing his conduct on the West Tennessee district bench. She said the charges showed no corruption and could be explained by accepted local customs including relations with black employees. Vienna reports Professor V F Hess claims discovery of a cosmic ultra radiation ray that pierces 80 inches of lead and is ten times as penetrative as radium. He says it likely has extraterrestrial origin, varies with sidereal time and is influenced by air pressure storms and magnetism. The finding causes scientific excitement.
A white man giving the name David Brown of Fort Screven Georgia was captured in Catherine Alabama by three national guardsmen and a civilian over the Marion Junction State Bank robbery. He allegedly confessed and $600 of the stolen money was recovered.
Sheriff Hamner reports 300 national guardsmen and possemen surround the Gee’s Bend area near the Alabama river where Marion Junction State Bank was robbed of about 4000 dollars. Two Alabama National Guard planes search the swamp as authorities close in.
Professor Albert Einstein arrives in Havana aboard the Bergensland with Mrs Einstein and is greeted by Cuban German diplomatic corps and scientific societies. He attends a luncheon by the Cuban Engineering Society and meets President Machado before resuming his voyage to California.
Former Magistrate George F. Ewald his wife Bertha and Dr Francis M Schirp signed a letter from the Steuben Society urging Ewalds appointment to Mayor Walker and were named in two indictments. The charges allege Ewalds offered Dr Schirp $2000 to use his influence and accuse Schirp of accepting it.
The Georgia court of appeals reversed a Waycross city court ruling dismissing Mrs Mattie Evans damage suit against Dr C M Stephens for $10,000 claiming a broken needle was left in her body after surgery. The court held the case should have been tried before a jury.
A. L. Pickeux of Forest Hills New York was wounded when his car was fired on by a national guard patrol on strike duty in Danville Virginia. Officials said Pickett failed to halt.
Mrs. H. J. De Bosis widow of poet Adolfo De Bosis and seven others face trial by a special war tribunal in Rome on charges of conspiring to disturb the constitutional order and incite rebellion through clandestine publications. Adolfo De Bosis said to be in Switzerland. case cited in Rome and Washington dispatches.
Newark New Jersey reports a deli shop sale where buyer William Schacht observed a boost during a demonstration week. David Fishman testified in Chancery court that $100 was distributed among friends to inflate receipts to $350, while the first week after purchase fell to $100.

He plans a one mile vacuum-tube test with mirrors to refine his 186284 mile per second result and anticipates a visit by Dr Albert Einstein to California.
Washington December 19 Chairman Hawley of the house ways and means committee rejected claims of a conspiracy to issue tax refunds to Republican campaign contributors. He said refunds total millions to taxpayers regardless of party and cited specific Democratic figures and corporate recipients to refute the charge.
In Rockford two men robbed Mrs. Henry Larson last night and took all but her lipstick. She used the lipstick to defend herself and later the thieves were identified as Victor Zandrowski and Joseph Snestokes. Police say they confessed to additional holdups.
Three men entered the Auto-Strop Razor Company offices in Newark and forced the assistant manager to open the safe. They escaped with $10,000 amid the Dec 19 incident.
Manitoba Premier John Bracken warns that secession demands may rise again as western farmers press for agrarian relief. He cites a Wilkie Sask farm group resolution and recent farmer meetings across Saskatchewan and Manitoba voicing calls for a western unit and federal action to guarantee wheat prices between 70 cents and $1.15 a bushel amid land tax protests.

Atlanta December 19 Chairman James A Perry of the Georgia public service commission said he would recommend settlement by the legislature of the dispute between a majority of the commission and Greyhound Lines Inc over location of terminal facilities.
Five prisoners at Onondaga Penitentiary used 12 hack saws for two days to break out but were foiled. Prison officers confess they supplied the saws as a test of the new steel bars that have replaced the old iron ones.
Tokyo and Moscow clash over the Vladivostok branch of the Bank of Korea after a Soviet order to close the bank. Tokyo calls the move unjustifiable and unfriendly and seeks withdrawal, while the Soviet embassy says the bank's existence violated Soviet economic policy and notes the branch was the sole bourgeois bank in Russia.
San Francisco reports at least six, possibly nine, missing after a launch capsized at the mouth of Tomalay.
