Indians Use Canes Presented by Lincoln as Chief Symbols

Albuquerque December 15. In 1863 Lincoln gave silver ceremonial canes to Pueblo and Zuni governors in New Mexico, tokens later seen as authority symbols for the pueblos. The canes, passed Governor to Governor, became emblems of rule and the Great White Father’s recognition. A past incident over a cane sparked government punishment and Pueblo anger, later mollified. Governors are elected by cacique councils at set periods.
