Berlin reports Hitler's Schutzstaffel unit the black corps warned state enemies that Nazi guards must be reckoned with in a possible showdown. The alert, issued via Voelkischer Beobachter, accompanies Berlin police readiness orders under Count Von Helldorf as the capital remains outwardly quiet.
Washington Aug. 1 Some supporters of the Wilcox air base bill fear a presidential veto could kill the measure. The $120,000,000 six zone air defense plan passed the Senate and awaits action at the White House. Rep Wilcox plans to press the issue with Secretary Dern and Gen Douglas MacArthur and hopes to meet the president to discuss the bill. If signed, Dern would appoint a five officer commission to survey U S cities for bases, with candidates including Portland Seattle Fairbanks Denver Salt Lake City Albuquerque Boston Portland ME Concord NH.
Metuchen New Jersey August 1 Gus Lindenthal 85 designer of the Hell Gate Bridge in New York died at his home in Raritan township after months of ill health. An Austrian native he came to America at 24 and began as a stone mason then built bridges for Chicago and Pittsburgh and for the Erie Railroad. In 1900 he planned a Hudson River span from New York to New Jersey. the George Washington Bridge followed more than three decades later.
An advertiser cites S A Lanier of Sawtelle California praising Kruschen Salts for rapid weight loss. He claims 7 pounds in a week after using the product daily and following dietary limits. The ad urges readers to buy a 4 week supply at Rountree's Pharmacy or any drugstore.
A note found by a taxi driver suggests Mandeville Zenge may have killed himself after the mutilation slaying of Dr. Walter Bauer. The note, signed Mandeville, cites Louise Bauer and ends with I intend to end it all. Police pursue handwriting and blood-stain clues while an inquest is delayed to August 25.
Mandeville Zenge, 26, of Canton Missouri is sought by police in three states for questioning in the death of Kirksville physician Dr. Walter J. Bauer. Bauer said a man registering as T. S. Jones in Chicago performed a mutilating operation before he died in a Southside hospital. Mrs. Bauer, nurse Louise Schaffer of LaGrange, Missouri, described seeing Zenge recently and said she planned a belated honeymoon with Bauer before his death.
Washington reports the United States Geographic Board says the capital of Ethiopia is pronounced Adddis Ahwawa with the stress on the first syllable of each word and that few people say it correctly.
A Pennsylvania express train struck workers on the tracks three miles south of Wilmington, killing six men. The electric locomotive pulled the train bound for Washington.
President Roosevelt allotted 5.11 million dollars in work relief funds to the treasury for a three fold drive to tighten tax collection. The plan includes a nationwide study of liquor tax evasions and checks on small income tax returns. The program funds state projects and a retail trade survey.

Washington reports a defensive drive to protect the AAA from tax suits as 636 such cases rise. Tax experts from the attorney general’s staff assist federal prosecutors in fighting injunctions to halt tax collection. Half a dozen specialists work on key cases, with more due next week to defend the AAA against suits by 17 Chicago packers. Nearly 40 tax lawyers are assigned to federal district court workloads. All 90 members of the tax division under Frank J. Wideman focus on preserving the New Deal farm program.
New Orleans report by Henry Plauche of the New Orleans Cotton Exchange notes the technical position of cotton changed little over the past year. The 1933 34 cotton year ended July 31 with a 4 million bale production drop offset by a 2.23 million bale fall in world consumption, leaving carryover 1.917 million bales lower than a year earlier. World consumption of American cotton is estimated at 12.242 million bales, with 917 thousand linters, versus 14.472 million with 935 thousand linters in 1932 33. A total of 5.037 million bales was shipped abroad in the last 12 months, down from 7,728,957 in the year ending July 31, 1934.

Moscow reports Otto Schmidt announcing a proposed regular passenger service across the north pole subject to the success of Sigmund Levaneffsky and two companions. A two year trial and preparation would precede operation with a six ton load of gasoline and an eleven ton plane weight. The fliers expect to reach San Francisco in daylight after 60 to 72 hours.
Governor Eugene Talmadge led a rural Georgia rally blasting federal taxes on tobacco. He claimed Georgia farmers faced higher costs and that ten times the leaf price goes to taxes, urging independence from Washington. Commissioner Linder joined in criticizing federal agriculture policies and agents. The duo spoke in Vidalia on August 1, 1936, criticizing the New Deal and urging a 1936 political shift.
Atlanta reports a three judge federal court hearing on the validity of a new state law setting warehouse handling fees for tobacco warehousing. Attorney General Yeomans O H Dukes and George Goode will represent the state. Warehousemen challenged the law and a Macon federal judge granted a temporary restraining order.
Marlinton West Virginia state police hunted for nine year old Raymond Sharp after his grandmother Mrs Jennie Sharp 73 and her son William Sharp 42 were found slain in their home. Neighbors discovered Mrs Sharp dead in a bedroom and her son unconscious in another room last night. A family horse was also missing from its stall.
A bride of seven months, Mrs. Charlotte Tendrich, 17, died in Miami early today from poison, according to Constable Georgia Hardie. She wore night clothes and a marriage certificate along with a clipping announcing her marriage to Sammy Tendrich, 22, were pinned to her clothing.
The report notes initial tobacco sales in 15 markets with prices from 6 to 33 cents. First sale at Vidalia by Vanns sold 114 pounds at 15 cents, another sale of 148 pounds at 26 cents, and Big Dixie in Pelham reported 12,000 pounds at 24.60 cents. The tobacco is described as average grade.
The Pelham report notes about 250 000 pounds on floors with 21.70 cents as first row average. Cobb Foxall in Statesboro sold 214 pounds at 20 cents. About 600 000 pounds offered in Nashville as buyers flock to tobacco money. Warehouses bid to handle crops and keep fees despite a state law cutting rates. federal court order halts full change and requires posting fee differences. Growers in Georgia began selling 50 to 55 million pounds of tobacco as auctions opened in 16 southern towns. Governor Eugene Talmadge attended in Vidalia as buyers, warehousemen and auctioneers packed the hotels while traders eyed prices after a wet or dry season. Last year the state produced 33.62 million pounds at an average 18.73 cents, fueling optimism for higher returns this year.
