Expedition to Copper Canyon Never Reaches Deep Gorge

Paving Bids Sought for Morven Valdosta Highway

Quithan Ga April 27 Bids are advertised to open four miles on the Morvens Valdosta road with 4092 miles of paving and one bridge in Brooks County Bids open May 12 in Atlanta The State Highway Department let a contract last week for sidewalks curbs and gutters in Morven and work will start immediately The Quitman Morven road is nearing completion with plans to extend paving through Barney County into Adel.

Kiwanis Club hosts state official visit in Thomasville

Third District Lt Governor Leonard Elliott of Ton ton Ga visited the Thomasville Kiwanis Wednesday at Glen Arven for the regular Friday meeting. He praised the club for youth service and Key Club work, presented a certificate to past president Elay McLeod, and urged members to spread their spirit to smaller communities. Visitors included Hugh Robinson of Atlanta and John C Crum of Valdosta.

Rattlesnakes Probe Brooksville Fields in Bold Kill Run

In Quitman Georgia on April 27 farmer R. V. Weaver reported a six foot rattler with fourteen rattles killed near his farm. Turpentine workers in the same woods killed two menacing snakes later the day, and two more large snakes were brought down in nearby woods.

Michael Santalucia of Binghamton, the last of the city’s custom hat makers, says the automobile has encouraged sartorial sloppiness. He claims men stopped dressing up because of the auto, saying they are never on the street and are always hidden in cars.

Jewish Jerusalem eyes population rise by 1952 end

Jerusalem Jewish population is projected to exceed 100000 by the end of 1952 after a recent census showing about 110000 Jews in the city. No estimate was provided for Arabs in the Arab-held Old City sector.

Brooks County farm family to be honored by FHA in Tifton

The Moore family of Disse Route 1 Brooks County will receive Farm Family Achievement Day honors in Tifton May 3 with Kenneth Reynolds and other leaders. Their 1940s yields rose from peanuts 800 to 2000 pounds per acre and corn 20 to 40 bushels. tobacco rose from 90 to 1600 pounds per acre. They improved hogs milk cows and kept soil in terraces with cover crops. They placed second in a five acre peanut contest in 1947 and won the 1948 five acre contest with 1714 pounds per acre.

Board Reelects School Teachers for 1950 51 in Thomasville

The Board of Education met at noon with President Jerger and committee approval to reelect teachers for 1950 51 across multiple schools including Thomasville High East Side Junior High and Dewey City Elementary. The vote covered many names. several teachers did not apply for re election. Contracts were authorized for rewiring and relighting East Side School and payments for various suppliers and services.

Newspapers cut accident rate in ANPA safe driving drive

New York April 27 AP newspapers in the American Newspaper Publishers Association safe driving campaign last year lowered the accident rate to a record low. At the ANPA convention awards were given for driver safety including first place scrolls and certificates of merit to 45 papers completing the year without an accident. 389 newspapers in the U S and Canada participated, operating 5181 vehicles for 111 923 800 miles with 2352 accidents and two fatal accidents.
