Newark police detained Tony Misiak on a liquor transport charge after finding a gin bottle and large cash in his patched pocket. The man, described as a mendicant, claimed wealth through savings and denied ill-gotten money while noting his wife had left him for months.
Residents of Thom asville are urged to attend the Legion Minstrel Show at the Rose Theatre Friday night. The program features six soloists led by Eustis Harrell, end men led by Dr. Jenkins, piano by Joe Singletary, an orchestra of about ten pieces, a special imported act, a dancer, and a guest WOCO-PEP tenor from Atlanta. Advanced tickets are on sale for reserved seating.

Washington reports the appropriations committee favors immediate retirement of the veteran airship Los Angeles. With Macon due to enter service next year, the panel says decommissioning could save a large portion of 270000 allocated for the ship. Rep Ayers urged salvaging if not sold.

Items like hosiery handkerchiefs dress goods and gloves were hidden inside 35 percent of the packages. Authorities ordered tighter scrutiny at the dead letter office and to watch for such attempts.

Washington reports General Peyton C. March the World War chief of staff has written a 95000 word memoir titled The Nation At War to counter critics. The book details clashes with General Pershing and the War Department and notes Congress scrutiny and a later promotion to full general.
Georgia's Senator William J. Harris dies in office at age 68 after a career as a state legislator and U S senator. He championed organized labor and prohibition and managed Wilson's Georgia campaign. Burke Harris burial planned in Cedartown. brother James Coffee Harris and Governor Roosevelt expressed condolences.
Santiago reports Chile officially left the gold standard today after nine months of effort to maintain the peso at par. The regime had imposed exchange controls after the July overthrow of Carlos Ibanez, with the peso previously around 12 cents in gold and the potential rate collapse to 20 pesos per dollar or lower.
At the annual stockholders meeting in Schenectady Gerald Swope reported first quarter earnings of 16 cents a share, down from 38 cents a year earlier. Dividends available fell to 4.51 million from 10.84 million, while orders totalled 33.40 million vs 60.37 million and sales billed were 37.88 million vs 61.96 million.

Polk county prepared to pay final tribute to Senator William J. Harris who died in Washington. His body will arrive Thursday at 9:00 a.m. and lie in state at the First Presbyterian Church until 2 p.m. Interment will follow at Greenwood cemetery. A city council committee and American Legion post will greet the arrival and furnish a guard of honor.
