Monroe Michigan reports the conviction of Chas D Smith for bigamy and a four and a half year penitentiary sentence. The case follows his marriage to Miss Tiny Turner of Metcalfe and a pattern of desertion after siphoning her property and pursuing new marriages.
Bearden man shot near town Sunday night died Tuesday morning after two days of life threatening wounds. Coroner's jury found Jim Williams the murderer amid extensive evidence. Sheriff Hight and Deputy Singletary located Williams at Fletcherville, with two women and Fred Mitchell detained to testify.
All members of W D Mitchell's camp No 423 are notified to attend the regular annual meeting at the courthouse on Monday the 27th inst. The American Planing Mill in the old compress building is in full operation with R. W. Terrell of Tifton overseeing installation. First planing occurred Monday and by Saturday all adjustments will be finished as regular shipments of dressed lumber begin. Thirty-five workers are employed under foreman J. A. Brown who came from Tifton with his new wife to settle in Thomasville.
A Negro man connected to the Moccasin Gap shooting of James Felkel near the Florida line was captured Tuesday afternoon but escaped after seizing a rifle from bailiff Hancock and deputy, breaking his shoulder, and fleeing as they prepared to transport him to Tallahassee.
J. M. Sasser from near Cairo brings seven head of beef cattle weighing 4330 pounds to town and sells the entire lot to Lewis and Clewis. The stock is described as fine as any could wish, illustrating Thomas county’s cattle potential if developed.
Early Monday the Brice and Adams store in Pavo Georgia was robbed when a safe was blown with dynamite and about 500 dollars taken. No trace of the thieves found but suspected to be part of an organized gang active across South Georgia.
Walter Mitchell was convicted of larceny in county court yesterday. Mitchell, described as a negro, pled guilty to stealing a brace and bit from another negro. Judge Hansell sentenced him to fifteen dollars and costs or six months of work. Mrs. M. Stein, guest of Mrs. Rachael Wolff, left for Chicago after receiving a telegram about cold weather. She departed with wraps as winter warnings reached her. Wm. McMillan, a leading farmer in the Merrillville district, was in town this week.
Thomasville’s lumber brokers report new charges effective April 15 raising rates two cents per hundred between South and Ohio river points. Southern firms fear price hikes will cripple business and may seek an injunction. Georgia Law Mill Association expected to pursue legal action. Locals watch closely as the dispute unfolds.
Waycross reports Superior court will hear two damage suits worth 30090 dollars filed by Mrs. Heidt against the Southern Telephone Company and Satilla Manufacturing Company. The actions stem from the death of Mrs. Heidt’s husband last May due to a live wire incident. Mrs. Heidt is sister to Mr. Henry Anold of this city and has finished a Dawson street residence.
Sheriff T J Hight returned from Liberty City with Grant Futch, a white man who killed Toney Raiford, a negro, nearly ten years ago. Futch had escaped after a 1893 shooting that killed Raiford who died at Dr McIntosh sanitarium.
Last Friday in Merrillville a voting party raised funds to clear the schoolhouse debt with a prize for the prettiest girl and 1700 votes cast at one cent each. Miss Sheffield won with 600 votes amid cheers as Prof. Matthews earned praise for leading the academy and debt relief. Three new houses and a church project signal town growth. Lucy Lester of Thomasville gains Wesleyan College honors as fifth in her class. the fourth grade tops the third 88 to 15 in a Thursday baseball game.
A fragment reflects on city deaths from eruptive disease urging officials to place tomb epitaphs. Mention is made of Sir Morphus and Leila Warren of Detroit currently at the Brighton hospital.
Rumor of a two cent increase in lumber freight rates proved true as temporary injunctions were signed by Judge Speer at Athens. Hearings are set for Macon on April 24, shocking the public and greatly pleasing lumbermen who sold on the higher rate.
The weekly EOP report states northern counties face near total fruit failure due to cold and a late snap, while peaches suffer most. It notes earlier cold weather left little harvest, rain and wet spells hinder work, but southern counties have planted most cotton and recent good weather helped farmers catch up.
Chas. D. Smith pled guilty to bigamy in Monroe Michigan to keep his wife from testifying in court. His wife in Moultrie planned to travel to Michigan. Earlier a third wife killed herself in Toledo Ohio as Smith prepared to desert her for a fourth marriage in Charleston.
The Board of Health issued a circular about sporadic eruptive cases in Thomasville. The illness is mild with no deaths, debated as chicken pox or mild smallpox, and not widespread. A strict quarantine in all suspected cases will be enforced to prevent spread.
A telegram notes the State Association of Elks closing its convention in Valdosta. Prof. E. L. Martin of Macon was unanimously reelected president. Major R. L. Wylly of this city was chosen Tyler. Several Thomasville Elks attended and praised Valdosta hospitality. The third annual convention will be in Savannah next June.
The Woman's Board of Home Missions of the Methodist Episcopal Church South meets in Atlanta this morning. Thomasville Methodist ladies attend the convention with great interest in mission work. Mrs Ed F Cook wife of the presiding elder of the Thomassville district visits Mrs Thomas Ragland. Mrs W W Blasingame stays with Mrs Mark Johnson at 18 Dixie Ave. Miss Annie Heath city missionary of Thom asville stops with Mrs B B Crew at 83 West Harris St.
