Senate leader Byrd argues for economy and support for Roosevelt relief requests while Congress debates emergency appropriations. He cites a $100 million relief measure and a total near $2.69 billion for the current fiscal year, with defense spending dominating the totals. Weather notes follow.
Decatur Ga April 16 Pi Bras well Deen director of the state department of public welfare said at a DeKalb county welfare meeting that on May 1 about 16 000 aged persons children and blind persons would be eliminated from the state pension rolls due to a 8 5 million deficit. He added that on March 1 there were 46 614 on the rolls and 59 000 applications with eighty percent eligible for assistance. The state insane asylum owed 375 900 for supplies and 72 000 patients. 25 000 must be returned to counties. DeKalb commissioner Scott Candler said 25 insane persons would be sent back to the county as there are no local facilities to care for them.
In a April 13 report Governor Ed Rivers announced a $2.2 million RFC loan to expand and modernize eleemosynary institutions in Georgia. PWA approved $1.8 million with WPA supplying the rest. projects cover Milledgeville State Hospital and Georgia Training School for Boys plus Cave Springs Deaf School Gracewood Mental Defective Training and Georgia Academy for the Blind in Macon.
Opp. Ala. April 13. Guests were forced to leap or climb to safety as fire destroyed the Covington Hotel. One man suffered a broken leg and burns, several were bruised or cut, but no critical injuries. Owner Budsen and Mayor Winston put the loss at about 65000.
Avanta April 8 report says the Georgia house investigation committee ordered a sweeping probe of the State Department of Labor. Rep Cicero Kendrick charged waste and extravagance and asked Labor Commissioner Ben Huiet to testify. The hearing followed earlier testimony on payroll pressures and departmental duties.

In Ty Ty Georgia on April 12, Don ald Dixon aged 20 died from tularemia three days after his mother Mrs W D Keen died of the same disease. They contracted the fever two weeks earlier after the son killed several rabbits and the mother helped him dress the meat. Mrs Keen was buried Tuesday and Dixon's burial is planned for tomorrow. Dixon was a son of Mrs Keen by a former marriage.
A pudgy saloon keeper Angelo Donigs 64 ran a million-dollar-a-month narcotics operation, labeled the head man behind the scenes. He and seven others were arrested. evidence links shipments from New York to Kansas City with distribution to Seattle Minneapolis Dallas Denver and New Orleans. Colburn, a 40 year old policeman, acted as a guard.
Snow and freezing weather hit a broad area with near zero readings in Wisconsin Minnesota and the Dakotas. Orchards report losses to apricot plum and pear crops in Pike County while Big lettuce and onion crops face danger on Long Island. Snow fell in Ohio Pennsylvania Connecticut Vermont and New York as cold snaps lingered across the continent.
The British and French governments voiced warnings to Germany and Italy as they pledged all possible aid to Greece and Romania should their independence be menaced. Chamberlain and Daladier urged restraint, noted Turkey and Soviet Russia talks, and set broader allied aims while preparing for possible Mediterranean and air war.
Larissa Greece April 13 Queen Geraldine Albania's fugitive Hungarian American queen regained strength enough to reunite with her infant son Prince Skander born two days before the Italian invasion of Albania. The child had been taken from the 23 year old queen after hemorrhages during a makeshift ambulance flight over Albanian mountains. He was brought to her in the hospital where she recovers.
