British reports say two German troop transports and a destroyer were sunk in a battle just outside Swedish waters as naval forces struck off Bergen and Narvik. HM ships Hunter and Hardy were lost in dawn actions with German forces, while German cruisers were damaged or sunk in subsequent strikes.
Georgia Court of Appeals dismissed an accusation against Coy Mills in Cairo City Court. Mills was charged after injuring a hog with his vehicle and allegedly failing to stop and give name and address. The court ruled it cannot presume the animal owner or others were always present.
Georgia partly cloudy and warmer tonight with showers by night in the northwest. Florida generally fair and warmer tonight and Thursday partly cloudy. Washington April 10 The administration adopted a cautious approach to allowing Scandinavian nations to use Export-Import Bank credits for non military purchases in the United States. Jesse Jones says we will wait and see before any permanent policy, detailing current credit status for Denmark Norway Sweden Finland and Iceland and noting money is held until shipments occur. Final decisions pending.
British warplanes direct hit a Koln class cruiser in Bergen harbor and attacked other German ships while returning safely. Britain and France pledge to deter German landings in Iceland Greenland and the Faroe Islands under Danish rule amid Norway Denmark invasions. In parliament, calls for peace talks rise as ministers reiterate war aims. Belgian cabinet maintains neutrality as Norway Denmark are invaded. Norge and Eidsvold torpedoed near Narvik with few survivors. Bombing reports target Majorstuet near Oslo. French high command notes a quiet night on Lorraine and Alsace fronts.
Copenhagen reports a second day under Nazi occupation with normal daily life continuing. Newspapers focus on proclamations and Berlin dispatches while Danish public acceptance appears calm. Justices also upheld contempt convictions against Patten Griffin and capitol guards, with fines or jail. The ruling leaves Miller, Watson, and Patten as highway board members.
Berlin reports German naval units defending Narvik destroyed three British destroyers and badly damaged another as Britain acknowledged heavier losses. Germany also said two cruisers Bluecher and Karlsruhe were lost under Norwegian coastal fire while declaring progress toward a mutual Norway settlement and occupation of several Norwegian ports.
President Roosevelt barred U.S. shipping from waters around the Scandinavian peninsula. A proclamation extended the European combat zone from Bergen Norway to the Russian mainland south of 70 degrees north latitude and 44 degrees east longitude. The zone covers west and north coasts of Norway and closes Russian ports to American vessels including the White Sea area and Archangel and Murmansk.
A London short wave broadcast picked up by NBC claims the British navy is in the largest battle since Jutland in 1916. It reports British units have forced the Skagerrak as German forces, believed to include 10 warships, are trapped. The Royal Air Force is said to be aiding the fleet.
Norwegian and Swedish reports say British forces recaptured the western Norwegian ports of Bergen and Trondheim after German occupation began yesterday. Official British sources withheld confirmation.
From Stockholm April 11 AP British fleet units attacked ten large German troop ships near Marstrand in the Skaggerak. The battle started at 6 p.m. and ended late evening with the transport fleet dispersed. Thunderous cannonading echoed along the Goteborg archipelago as planes joined the fight and one German destroyer was reportedly sunk. Fishing boats aided survivors.
