Elks Donate $200 to Winthrop American Legion Post

At a regular meeting the Winthrop Lodge of Elks voted to donate 200 to the Winthrop Post of the American Legion. The Elks also offered their hall for Legion use and designated a Legion night during the bazaar drawing veterans to participate.

Prisoners Escape From Deer Island

Two inmates escaped from Deer Island Tuesday night prompting a police search. Supt. Higgins believes they tried to swim the Shirley Gut channel toward Winthrop under cover of darkness and may have been swept away by the incoming tide. Neither rowboats nor craft were used. The escapees are Harry O. Jones, 19, of Water town and Floyd Johnson, 25, of De Queen, Ark, both previously trusted to attend the prison school with 100 others under guard.

School Committee Seeks Large Wheelock Wing Expansion

Reported at the upcoming town meeting the school committee will seek a sizable appropriation to add a new wing on the Wheelock Street side of the school. Plans are reportedly underway.

Fires at Winthrop Street Buildings Trigger Alarms

Early Thursday a fire alarm from box 68 reported a blaze at 197 203 Winthrop st tied to Sweeney and Rich, McNeill Brothers. Firefighters evacuated occupants at 199 Winthrop and nearby 201 amid dense smoke. two fires caused total damage near $8,000 with one incendiary origin and another from spontaneous combustion. Police investigated two suspects seen fleeing the scene.

Casassa and Harvey Win at Primaries

In Winthrop on Primary Day 57 percent of voters turned out despite heavy rain. Andrew A. Casassa won the senatorial race while C Joseph Harvey led in the representative contest with 454 votes followed by Charles D. Bradbury and Magee. Totals for local candidates were reported from Calvin Coolidge Precincts and other columns, with continued results on the next page.
