Union Congregational Church to dedicate new altar at 10:45 morning service in memory of Mrs Cribby and pipe organ at 7:30 evening service. Organist Roger Brown to perform as the friendly church celebrates the installation with expectedly fine music.
Leslie E. Griffin writes to the local Legion Post praising the Legion and other groups for a recent Carnival that benefited the Winthrop Community Hospital Building Fund. He notes the great sum raised will aid the community project for future service to suffering humanity and extends the trustees’ thanks for the successful effort.
The Winthrop Community Hospital Carnival thanks the People of Win and numerous affiliated organizations for donations sales of tags and volunteer work. Post No 146 sponsors praise the community paper for ads and publicity and promise final accounting after bills are audited. TOM BRATH chairs the effort.
Leo F. Donovan former Brockton Elks leader receives appointment as District Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler of the Massachusetts Southeast District. The seven lodge district includes Winthrop Lodge where he once lived. Donovan is married and serves as district sales manager for Weston Biscuit Company of Watertown.
John J. Moynihan of 210 Pauline Street believed a friend borrowed his roadster and did not report it missing until it was found burning on Upland Road early Wednesday. Police say the auto was stolen and a total loss. The car had been left in front of John Holmes on Jefferson Street Tuesday evening.
Edward Rowe, a Winthrop garbage collector, was killed last Monday evening in Chelsea when his team of horses bolted and the wagon passed over him. He was well liked in Winthrop for his obliging nature and helpful conduct.
Winthrop leaders back Mayor Curley’s push to draft a legislative bill that would end unfair compulsory auto insurance rates. The Board of Selectmen asked Town Solicitor Leon C. Guptill to work with officials to protect motorists and secure a fair rate for local car owners.
The recent carnival at Community Hospital drew thousands and is expected to net about $5000 for the hospital trustees. organizers call it one of the town's biggest events.
The Winthrop Chapter of the American Red Cross held its first fall meeting with seventeen members present. Plans for fall and winter work were discussed, with emphasis on school activities and the dental clinic. The chapter reappointed Dr. Reith to lead the clinic, reported 36 Christmas bags for soldiers abroad, and outlined production of layettes and clothing for emergency relief and hospitals.
A man and woman of Shirley Street received one year in the House of Correction after a Sept. 4 arrest in Boston. Police chased them to Lynn Marsh Road where they allegedly possessed $100 worth of morphine. The woman had a prior record. the couple were not granted leniency due to their marriage plans.
The Highlands sea wall repair contract after recent storms goes to M. McDonough Company of Sau gus Mass by the Massachusetts Metropolitan District Commission. The bid totals $9285.
Miss Olive Seward of Winthrop became the bride of Allan Brooks of Harvard administrator secretary of the state department of public utilities. The ceremony was led by Rev. Ashley Day Leavitt at the Harvard Church Brookline. The couple will reside in Harvard after a wedding trip to Maine and New Hampshire.
Miss Kathryn Marie Cronan announces the fall opening of classes on October 1. She has taught Elocution in Winthrop Revere Providence and Malden for four years and looks forward to a large Winthrop class.
