Public schools report 3112 students registered on opening day up from 3030 last year, an increase of 82. The Junior High also logged clear totals as Superintendent Edward R. Clarke oversaw smooth enrollment ahead of vacations.
SEWELL VERNEY of 517 Pleasant St Winthrop Mass asks why the town has no candidate for the present senatorial campaign. The note records a local inquiry about political participation and candidate absence.
The three day Park and Winthrop Yacht Club regatta drew about 80 yachts in eight classes. Wanderer VII won the Class I series with first on Saturday second on Sunday and third on Monday tying Dorothy which placed first second and third but was disqualified for starting after the gun. the two boats were declared tied for first until Wanderer VII won a sail off. Open house and socials followed for Massachusetts Bay clubs with prize events on Monday evening.

Town Clerk Mrs. Bessie Dodge issued general registration for all precincts on September 27 from 2 to 4 PM at Town Hall. Winthrop voters will decide the Republican nomination for the ninth district State Senator in Tuesday’s primary. Three prominent candidates seek the seat: Senator Edward J. Cox of Chelsea, ex-Senator John E. Beck of Chelsea, and Representative Conde Brodbine of Revere. The district covers Chelsea Revere Winthrop and Saugus.
About 250 residents attended a Town Hall session with the Board of Registrars and Town Solicitor Leon C. Guptil to address illegal registration dates set by Winthrop under a new law from March 8. Discrepancies prompted cancellation of registration for the primaries with later dates to be announced for the November election. Town officials debated legality, with Selectman Barry urging no registration during the restricted period while Chairman Dunham said registrations could occur but would not appear on primary voting lists. The Board and Solicitor confirmed the dates were cancelled.
