Local Field Day Shines With Young Athletes

The annual Field Day drew many town youths to compete in athletic events with prizes donated. Ruth Floyd, daughter of Park Superintendent Arthur Floyd, won the All Around Girls Championship with 555 points, Virginia Carter close behind with 540. Spectators watched as unofficial records fell throughout the day.

Winthrop Swimming Meet Slated for Holiday Weekend

The Winthrop Swimming Association holds its annual meet Saturday and Monday at 2 pm from the association raft on Winthrop Shore Drive at Beacon Street head. Open to all Winthrop residents with no entry fee. Beautiful cups awarded to first to third places. Entries may be made with Robert Millen at 4 Shore Drive.

Names Added To Voting List For Primaries

Three hundred fifteen names were added to the voting list during this week’s registration for the primaries. The total count now reaches seven thousand seven hundred forty eight. precinct by precinct tallies follow, with San Total 57 noted.

Three Day Regatta Opens Saturday at Cottage Park

The Cottage Park Yacht Club hosts a three day regatta starting Saturday with over a hundred yachts from classes including Marconi 1 and 15 footers, Star lash, and Winthrop Hustlers competing. Trophies awarded by class on a point basis with final ceremonies at the club later. This is the third and final race in the Lipton Trophy series.

The Winthrop Garden Club announces a flower show on Monday September 12 at the Deane Winthrop Barn. It adds three extra classes Winter Bouquets House Plants and any exhibit of merit not otherwise classified. Judges are expected to stay busy due to numerous promising entries.

Beggars' Parade And Penny Sale At Local Legion Event

Attendance at the Beggar's Parade and Penny Sale by the American Legion Auxiliary and Legion far exceeded expectations. The public flocked to the event on Tuesday evening and were well cared for as items for pennies drew buyers. Prizes included six pound Scotch hams large bags of flour and sugar and pairs of shoes.

Third Suspicious Fire at 254 Main Street House

State and local police investigate the third suspicious blaze at the wooden dwelling owned by the R. C. Kixby estate at 254 Main St. Flames appeared through the roof shortly after 5 Sunday morning. Firemen fought two hours to extinguish a $2000 blaze started in the rear of the first floor. A prior fire of suspicious origin damaged the upper part of the house about ten days earlier, with another fire occurring roughly three months ago.
