Nipper Winner In Local Yacht Races

In a fluky Boston harbor wind, Leslie Rawding’s Nipper captured the 18-foot championship series race by 13 minutes, beating a becalmed fleet under Fort Strong. Andy Aicardi’s Bambino rose from near last to overtake the naval crowd. other class victors included Merlin, Blitzen, Hustler Hopset, Corsair, and Geraldine in Cottage Park events. The event featured frantic wind-hunting, shifting breezes, and a lively scramble along inside and outside courses as Dorden II led the pack to Sculpin’s ledge before the page ends.

Committee Meets On Unemployment In Winthrop

A Winthrop Committee on Unemployment meeting led by Chairman Churchill discussed plans for winter funding and urged early action to shore up a depleted treasury. Churchill's resignation was deferred, with he to retain chair until the next meeting for nominating committee action. About 15 or 26 members attended.

With the new Post Office at Pauline and Hermon streets a traffic hazard and blind corner arise at Metcalf square. Drivers face increased risk as motorists approach from Pauline Street, and prior to construction there were several accidents suggesting the danger is serious.

Plummer Man Injured In Plank Slip At Reid's Boat Yard

Henry Soper of Plummer avenue suffered a two inch gash above the left eye and multiple bruises after a plank slipped as he stood beside a lighthouse boat being built at Reid's Boat Yard on Monday afternoon. He was treated at Winthrop City Hospital by Dr Johnson and is expected to miss work for a week. It is his first time off due to injury in 45 years.

Planning Flower Show for Sept 12

The Winthrop Garden Club launches its first annual exhibit at the Deane Winthrop Barn on Monday September 12 from 2 to 7 30 p m with a nominal admission. Nonprofessionals in Winthrop may enter flowers grown locally. Entries must be at the Barn by 10 30 a m. judging by three officials and public voting will award a special prize for the top exhibit with twelve classes listed.

On Wednesday afternoon over 350 boys and girls took part in Playground Day at Ingleside Park. The event featured races and games across midget to senior divisions with prizes for winners and special medals for all attendees. Annual Outing of Emblem Club No 15 at Winthrop Inn

The Winthrop Emblem Club No. 15 held its annual outing with 75 members using a large bus and cars to Hampstead New Hampshire’s Winthrop Inn hosted by Mr. and Mrs. Wm Clarke. Melrose faces Melrose City Club in a Suburban League game at Ingleside Park on Saturday. The two teams have tied both prior meetings, 6-6 at Winthrop with Eddie Parsons homering to force the draw, and 2-2 at Melrose. Police Capture Three In Chase In East Boston

East Boston youths were seized in Winthrop after a dramatic chase. Police fired 10 shots. one boy jumped into Belle Isle Inlet but was dragged to safety. The trio, attempting to break into Fred's Canteen on Main Street, faced East Boston District Court charged with breaking and entering. They pleaded not guilty and were held for a hearing next Wednesday.

Prize Awards Feature Carnival Progress at Winthrop Carnival

A town hall meeting reveals plans for Winthrop’s upcoming Commun ity Hospital Carnival with a goal of a record turnout. Major prizes include an automobile and an electric refrigerator, with a radio likely as a third prize. five leading merchants and five organizations have been contacted for more gifts. Tickets cost 10 cents, 3 for 26 cents, or 12 for $1, and a parade with bands and drum corps is planned for September 10 with cash prizes. Purple Heart awards for local World War I veterans will be presented by Massachusetts officials, possibly with Governor Ely attending. Boxing, wrestling, races, games, fireworks, and a large midway are planned for Ingleside Park from September 8 to 10.

Kiwanis Club Weekly Meeting in Winthrop

The Winthrop Kiwanis Club held its regular weekly meeting last Tuesday at the Winthrop Arms Hotel with strong attendance. A vote of thanks was extended to the Boston Rever e Beach and Lynn Railroad for bus transportation to Camp Powassan. Dr Abrams reported children at the summer camp enjoyed their vacation. Richard F Kirby shared a Europe trip and the Eucharistic Congress. Plans for winter activities were discussed.
