Pleasant Park Yacht Club opens its 1939 season with Open Night dinner at 6 p m followed by vaudeville acts starting 7 p m hosted by John Hendricks and the Entertainment Committee. Reservations due by June 1 and the annual Zambola event set for June 9 and 10 under Commodore George J Hamilton.
Superintendent Arthur E. Boudreau and Principal C. J. Thayer thank the Dept. of Education official Walter Downey as the Senior High School is placed in approved Class A for 1939. The newspaper commends the staff and wishes continued success.
The Senior High School gym event featured blue uniform students showcasing gymnastic skills and specialty numbers. Highlights included a Grand March led by Eve lyn Gillette and Esther Brownell waving flags, Indian Club swinging by Esther Brow n nell, Bounding Ball by Edith Antunes, mimetics by Virginia Reed, fencing drill, marching, and foreign and American dance costumes.
About 300 Elks and friends attended a testimonial banquet at the Elks Home honoring Andrew A. Biggio after his retirement as Exalted Ruler of Winthrop Lodge. Former Rep. Daniel J. Honan served as toastmaster and praised Biggio for service to the lodge and the order.
A May Day dance at the Cottage Park Yacht Club clubhouse drew many members and friends for an evening of dancing and music. The event, run by the club’s entertainment committee, featured a midnight repast and lasted past midnight, noted as one of the finest social affairs of the season in Winthrop.
Miss Ella Mason of Somerset has been chosen to represent the American Poetry Association of Massachusetts during National Poetry Week at the World’s Fair in New York beginning May 22. She is a guest of the Brooklyn Poetry Society at Hotel Victoria, where she spoke on Music in Poetry.
Veteran organizations and non military groups join Sunday May 28 at 10:00 a.m. on Pauline Street to march to First Baptist Church for Memorial Sunday services led by Rev. A Ray Meserve. On Tuesday May 30 parade steps off at 9:15 a.m. from Pauline Street Metcalf Square, proceeding to Winthrop Cemetery for graveside decor, with Gold Star Mothers and veteran auxiliaries present, then through River Road to Madison Avenue and Metcalf Square before disbanding. Lincoln's Gettysburg Address and Meserve address to close the ceremonies.
The Hospital League meeting at the hospital on May 18 had 24 members present. Reports of the bridge held April 27 were read. The League thanks merchants who contributed to the bridge. The Young Woman's Republican Club donated 12 toys to the children's ward. Sand wiches and tea were served by hostesses Mrs. Wallace Haley Mrs. Chester Griffin Mrs. Lewis Leitch and Mrs. William Marsh.
Gov. Saltonstall sent to the executive council the renomination of Richard R. Flynn of Winthrop to the state aid and pensions commission for another three-year term at 5500 dollars per year. Flynn, in the department 29 years, 24 as commissioner, was first named by Gov. Curtis Guild and has been reappointed by most governors.
Judge Joseph T. Zottoli ruled for the Town of Winthrop in a suit by Mary A. McCarthy of 20 Neptune Ave claiming injuries from a March 1938 fall into a sidewalk hole. Attorney Esdaile represented the plaintiff. Town Solicitor Fred W. Fisher defended for the town.
