Colonial Chapter O E S held Glorified Night at Ellis ballroom with over two hundred members and guests. Mrs Margaretta Taylor Winter served as General Hostess and G Arthur Sawyer acted as Master of Ceremonies. The event showcased a diversified musical program and dancing.
Swett's Market manager Frank F. Swett says plans are underway to take over the adjoining Somerset avenue store in an expansion that adds a modern bakery and more space for a larger display of foods. The project aims to offer fresh home made bread pastries and related delicacies to patrons.
The Board of Selectmen discussed building a 12 inch wall along the sidewalk at Ingleside Park to stop water and debris from Woodside avenue and Pauline street from overflowing the path and flooding the field. The measure passed to protect the field from future damage.
Commander Fred H. Clark of Winthrop Post No. 146, American Legion, was appointed Chief Marshal by Chairman Frank K. Hatfield for the Tercentenary parade in town on Saturday, August 2.
The Tercentenary Committee tentatively schedules the flagpole dedication for Thursday June 12 at 8:00 PM on Town Hall grounds. The ceremony and program have been selected to mark the Tercentenary events.
The Memorial Day Committee representing five veteran groups met in the Town Hall selectmen's room with eight members present. Commander Colburn of the G A R presided and new officers were chosen: Chester O Donnell as Chairman, George Pierce as Secretary, Henry L Tenry as Chief Marshal. Russell Younger appointed to secure flags and Webster and Wickwire named to oversee the music.
At a Tercentenary Parade Committee meeting in Town Hall on Friday evening Representative Edgar F. Power was chosen by Chairman Hatfield to lead distinguished guests along the parade route before formations. The guests will then review the procession from a reviewing stand set along the march line. Invitations to distinguished guests were noted.
The local committee will not endorse either state flag for Winthrop's tercentenary. A Winthrop flag design using the town seal may be adopted. Officials have not yet settled on a single flag and could submit multiple options.
All Winthrop was shocked by the sudden death on Monday of Mrs Annie L Haberland wife of Christian J Haberland of 120 Main street following an operation Saturday for an acute attack of appendicitis Haberland was born in Providence the daughter of
Mrs Haberland helped open and run two Homer Candy Company stores in Revere and Winthrop. She earned many friends through her smiling greeting at both shops as the family settled in Winthrop after years in Revere.
Public hearing will be held at the Town Hall on Tuesday evening May 13 by the Planning Board. The session begins at 3 00 o clock.

At a Winthrop American Legion meeting the case of Francis M Masterson a disabled veteran charged with war time desertion was aired. A telegram from supporters asked Congress to discharge the petition and aid Masterson who faced a court martial for his absence from a debarkation hospital twelve years ago.
The local Board of Assessors released figures showing Winthrop's 1930 population at 16,645, up from 16,253 in 1929 and 16,456 in 1926. The data indicate growth since 1920, with earlier figures cited to contrast the increase.
A letter requests cooperation with the town in development plans as the Board pursues granolithic sidewalks on major streets. A survey shows the Winthrop Shore Drive west side sidewalk may fall under the Metropolitan District Commission jurisdiction. The Board asks if the Commission can act on constructing or laying the sidewalk along that shore side.
Chairman Hatfield has permission to borrow the Paul Revere bell on display at Exchange Trust Co Boston for local celebrations. The bell, once used by the Town Crier in Boston and Winthrop, is owned by Myron Tewksbury and will likely be used on August 2.
