Next Monday town voters, 6179 residents eligible, pick officials for 12 months. Polls open in four precincts from morning to 8 pm. Contests exist for selectman and park commissioner while town meeting members will be elected for eight years. Numerous local offices listed with candidates.
A Legion Post program at Legion Hall last Tuesday night drew appreciative attendance. Highlights included soprano solo by Miss Hurley, performances by Mr. Kearney, an Irish sketch by Mr. Emmett, the Pipps act, and a father and daughter musical piece. Dancing followed to midnight. Commander Smith and F. Melanson led. Next party on March 21. tickets from the commander are limited.
Mr and Mrs Richard L Casey of Newtonville announce the engagement of their daughter Eleanor Marie Casey to Webster Eugene Howard son of Mr and Mrs Charles W Howard of 16 Emerson rd Howard served in the Winthrop Machine Gun Co before being promoted to lieutenant He is a Harvard Class of 16 graduate
Mrs Sidney Low Evans of New Haven Connecticut daughter of Mr and Mrs Lewis H Freese was operated on Sunday morning at Strong Hospital in East Boston confirming a medical procedure of family concern.
At Legion Hall Winthrop War Veterans hear Past Department Commander James T. Duane discuss Legion work and Frank G. Thompson recounts his U S Maine service in Havana. Commander Donovan presents a $50 check to Commander Albert S. Smith as the meeting closes followed by a collation.
The Daisy Drive collected 314.38 dollars for the Women's Auxiliary of the local Legion Post. The total would have been higher if daisies had not run out early. Thanks are extended to contributors and a long list of volunteers across Winthrop Centre Thornton Beach Playstead Ocean Spray Winthrop Highlands and Pleasant Street. Winthrop Board of Trade also announced officers and directors. The meeting in Wadsworth Block drew a good turnout.
Chief Mc Neill presented Patrolman Benj F Howatt with a bronze medal a lapel button and 15 dollar check for bravery in saving 11 year old William J Patterson from drowning in Lewis Lake on December 8 1921. Patterson and rescuer Edwin W Gard ner faced danger during the incident in Winthrop with Howatt injured by mud after bringing the boy to shore.
John H. Devine of 239 Pleasant Street was seriously injured while skiing near Jaffrey New Hampshire last Saturday. A fellow climber, Thomas Fisher of Bartlett Road, assisted him after a fall that dislocated his shoulder. He was treated at Shattuck Inn and returned to watch events attended by 175 guests including Winthrop residents Mr and Mrs Devine Dorothy Dellano Ross and Thomas Fisher.
State Treasurer James Jackson will address the annual meeting and banquet of the Winthrop Improvement and Historical Association on Tuesday March 7 at the Cliff House. Mrs Maude McGarry Tibbetts will read with soloist Mrs Ella Duchemin Nutter as accompanist Miss Grace Sinclair. Nearly 300 members belong to the association.
