In a school event the Junior High Salver Cups were presented to the top performers. The awards went to a standout girl for all around excellence and to a standout boy for similar achievement, reflecting balance in athletic and scholastic effort.
Hospital trustees discuss campaign plans and a July 4 and 5 Legion Carnival display. Contributions received by August 2 and a shelter tent are approved with an accident room staffed by hospital personnel to be set up at the event.
A Point Shir ley group visited the Board of Selectmen seeking a hearing to protest a small business building on Tafts avenue. They claim the structure uses second hand materials and is merely a shack despite zoning approval and Building Inspector permission.
The Winthrop No. 56 Knights of Pythias held a Castle Hall election Tuesday evening naming officers. Elected were Chancellor-Commander Israel Leventhal, Vice-Chancellor Julius Stone, Prelate Julius Goldband, Master of Work Charles Epstein, Master of Arenas Abe Marcus, Inner Guard Ben Morris, Outer Guard Hyman Vigoda, Master of Finance Abe Alpert, Master of Exchequer Ben Perry, with Abe Hercules remaining as K R S.
Suburban Gas and Electric Co. Manager Chisholm and Metropolitan District Commission Chairman Tibbetts discussed replacing existing poles with modern light poles on Winthrop Shore Drive. The commission has the matter under advisement and hopes for favorable action.
A notice directs interested parties to view the office on Putnam Street before 10:00 o'clock Wednesday morning. It specifies a deadline and location for access or inspection.
Judges at Winthrop Hospital baby show cannot decide winners after examining 300 infants with 76 deemed 96 percent or higher perfect. Examination postponed until Tuesday July 1.
After mass at St. John the Evangelist, white mantillas, torch bearers, and flower girls strewed roses for the Blessed Sacrament carried around the church by clergy under the banner of Colonel Barber of Fort Banks. Next feast is Sacred Heart at 8:30 with children as guests of the pastor Rev. John T. O'Brien.
The Massachusetts Tercentenary Commission places 150 roadside markers in towns with early history. Frank Tucker oversaw two Winthrop tablets on Shirley Street near the Yacht Club and Revere Street. The markers note Governor Winthrop House and the Deane Winthrop House with ship signaling and occupancy histories.
Winthrop Post announces carnival events for July 4 with athletic races for boys and girls starting at 10 am. Directors Anthony Monti and Melvin T. Carver set events including 100 and 220 yard dashes plus a 115 lb jockey race for boys under 18 and under 10. Entries due by July 2 to Melvin Carver, 247 Winthrop Street.
The Highlands wall, built by the Metropolitan District Commission about 25 years ago at Grovers Avenue, has survived but the tarred strip behind it has deteriorated from sea action. Chairman Tibbetts asks the Commission to restore and grade the area to its former condition in anticipation of Shore Drive’s possible extension.
Four Winthrop youths escaped serious injury when their car overturned at the sharp Corner of River road and Buchanan street. The driver was alleged to be speeding as he attempted the turn when the rear left wheel collapsed under the strain and the vehicle wrecked.
Winthrop Lodge of Masons observed St John Day Sunday by attending services. Members gathered to mark the occasion with fraternal fellowship and ceremonial steps at the lodge house.
Ingleside Park has seen work over the past weeks with a 12 inch wall along Pauline Street inside the sidewalk. Loam was added, ground graded and seeded, and bushes planted at the edge to form a hedge once the area matures.
Frederic J. Muldoon Tom Brath and Finance Officer Stanley A Roberts were elected Monday evening at Winthrop Post 146 American Legion to represent the post at the Massachusetts Department State Convention in Williamstown July 24 25 and 26.
Chairman G. Wallace Tibbetts hosted the Medford ward and city committees outing at Salem Willows on Saturday. Tibbetts and Churchill attended Cambridge Tercentenary exercises on Wednesday and joined the North Shore Press Club that evening. They will take part in Medford exercises on July 2.
The Metropolitan District reports improvements at Mugford Circle Winthrop Shore Drive by re grading Mugford Boulder and Tablet and restoring the grass plot.
Signs to be placed at both entrances to the town are nearly completed and will be set in position during the present week.
The tentative route runs along Washington Avenue to Sturgis Street then Winthrop Shore Drive to Revere Street and Winthrop Street to Town Hall Viewing stand. Floats will proceed along Shore Drive to Pauline Street then Ingleside Park for gathering.
Suburban Gas and Electric Company has been honored again in the Tenney contest as its qualification achieved above the required quota.
Ralph E. Snider, treasurer of Winthrop Theatres Inc, donates 100 dollars to Community Hospital. The letter to Hon G Wallace Tibbetts shows cooperation to run hospital progress films and support the hospital undertaking.
Public playgrounds will open on Monday for the summer under Robert Perry, athletic instructor at the local High School, directing the community recreation effort.
