Protest Closing Of Sewing Project In Winthrop

Nearly 50 local women employed on the WPA Sewing Project appeared before the Board of Selectmen to urge appeals to State WPA authorities to continue the project. State headquarters ordered work halted under the WPA curtailment from Washington, while the Selectmen pledged to seek funds and authority to keep the project operating.

490 Aliens Reside Here According To Town Listing

Winthrop's blue book lists 490 aliens as of January 1 1941 with 139 Russian, 100 Canadian, 74 English, 51 Italian, 23 German citizens. Precincts 3 and 4 house 323 aliens. precinct counts include 85 in 1, 45 in 2, and 37 in 5 with detailed nationality breakdowns by precinct.

Three Day Carnival Opens With Military Parade At Ingleside Park

Winthrop Post No 146 American Legion announces a three day carnival July 3 4 5 at Ingleside Park. Fort Banks troops will stage a formal retreat and evening parade July 3 with Lt Colonel P S Lowe commanding. The event runs through July 4 and 5 ending with a fireworks finale. Commander Wm H Walsh leads the carnival with Percy L Sterling as general chairman and a large committee. Cooperation from First Corps Area Headquarters and General Kenneth T Blood at Fort Banks makes the opening spectacle rare outside a military reservation.

Musical Comedy and Minstrel Revue Postponed by Rain

The citizen military musical comedy and minstrel revue It s Gotta Be Different faced repeated rain delays. After three planned performances June 16 17 and 18 weather forced postponements to Sunday and Monday with further rain halting the show before completion. Captain Edward B Gallant leads the committee through the delays.
