The Young Woman's Club schedules four fall lectures on foreign affairs by nationally known authority Mrs Frank Mansfield Taylor. Open to public and club members, with first lecture in October and one each month through January.Further subject details to be announced.
Representative Daniel J. Honan reports that the Metropolitan District Commission awarded the sea wall and Winthrop Shore Drive repair to Anthony Ross & Son of Lexington Massachusetts. The legislature appropriated up to $40,000 for the project and the commission will complete the work as soon as possible.
The Pleasant Park Yacht Club held its second annual interclub regatta off Winthrop with 151 racing yachts the largest turnout of the season. Strong southerly winds shifted to northward and a heavy shower halted 66 boats from finishing while the event, directed by Commodore George N Hamilton, was deemed a success despite the stormy conditions.
Representative Honan reported the town supports a rock jetty near Great Head projecting 300 feet into the water. The structure 15 feet wide at the base and about 5 feet wide at the top is expected to create a pleasant sandy beach along Winthrop Shore Drive, per the Public Works Department.
Harold V. Bridgman Jr. of Winthrop, now at Norwich University in Vermont, earned the Allen Winter Rowe gold medal for top general improvement as a freshman. In his junior year he was elected Cadet Major and will be Squadron Commander next year, per the school superintendent.
Governor Charles F Hurley signed a bill by Representative Daniel J. Honan authorizing a $20,000.00 public Convenience Station on a Winthrop Shore drive to be built and maintained by the Metropolitan District Commission. The governor presented Honan the signing quill.
Elizabeth Harkins, 17, of 85 Center Street, was chosen Miss Winthrop of 1938 at a De Molay dance beauty contest held Friday night in Odd Fellows Hall. Second went to Agnes Powers, 18, from New York, visiting the North Shore. Thelma Belli, 17, of 35 Willow Ave., placed third. all are Winthrop High School graduates.
Police sought the hit and run driver who struck William E. Doherty of 22 Reed Street, Winthrop, as he crossed Atlantic Avenue near Northern Avenue. Doherty remained at City Hospital with a concussion of the brain.
Boston Revere Beach Lynn railroad launches a $1.25 unrestricted weekly pass starting Sunday June 26. The pass covers unlimited travel within the Narrow Gauge system to Boston Lynn Revere East Boston Winthrop and includes two children up to fourteen at no extra charge. Pass holders may travel day or night for the full week from 5 am Sunday to 5 am the next Sunday. Regular fares apply to others with a 15 cent Lynn zone fare. pass sales begin Friday at all stations.
