Impressive Exercises Mark Memorial Day Services By Winthrop Veterans

Citizens from all walks of life joined Winthrop veterans to honor Memorial Day. The procession moved from Metcalf square to the cemetery where graves were decorated and a program of band music prayers, speeches, and taps followed.

Transportation Committee Named

A committee to study the future transportation system of the town has been appointed by Moderator Joseph E. Davison. The unofficial group will likely receive official authority at a forthcoming special town meeting to consider consolidating with the Boston Elevated and to present the issue to the Legislature later this year. The committee comprises the three selectmen Roy A. Pigeon Walter G. Baker and David Belcher Town Counsel Fred W. Fisher Planning Board members Sidney E. Blandford Edward R. Thomas and others.

Annual Flower Show of Winthrop Garden Club Friday and Saturday

Winthrop residents may view the Garden Club of Winthrop annual flower show in Odd Fellows Hall Paulinest this Friday June 4 from 2 to 9 pm and Saturday June 5 from 10 am to 9 pm. The display features blooms from local gardens with entries open to non professional Winthrop residents. Proceeds support civic efforts and garden education while Little Flower Mart sells garden accessories and hand painted pots.

Senior Graduation Exercises Set for June Eleventh

The senior class will graduate Friday June 11 at 10 o'clock in the Winthrop Theatre. Speakers include James Boyd Merton Bernstein Robert Walker Selma Freeman Sylvia Solomon and Ruth Bennett. The senior chorus will sing four selections and diplomas will be awarded after a presentation of awards. White suits are official dress for the class of 1937 with blue kerchiefs for girls blue ties for boys and a single red rose for all graduates. Roses are to be purchased through the school.

Made Commander Of U.S. Destroyer J. Fred Talbott

Lieut-Commander Clarence Pike, son of Mrs. Catherine Pike of Washington Avenue, left Winthrop for Annapolis to assume command of the U S S J Fred Talbott on Saturday. Pike, educated in local schools and Boston College, trained at Harvard Nautical School and was commissioned there. He is among a few non Naval Academy graduates to attain such a post and the Talbott will operate on the Atlantic Coast.

The Jewish Civic League of Winthrop elected officers George Goldberg president Max Winerman vice president Sidney D Goldberg treasurer Bernard J Busch secretary and directors including Robert Berman Bernard B Ginsberg Edward Greenberg Bert Marcus and Dr Arthur Promiser. Wells Elevated to Lieutenant in Local Police ranks

William Wells, longtime local police officer and current sergeant, was unanimously promoted to lieutenant by the Board of Selectmen. The decision notes desire for a more coordinated department, with Wells joining Chief Pumphret and Lieutenant Donovan in leading a 1 chief, 2 lieutenants, 1 sergeant, 16 patrolmen and a clerk force.
