Mardi Gras at VFW Draws Fifteen Entrants
The VFW Mardi Gras event attracted about fifteen entrants with three prizes awarded. Beatrice L Cahill won first prize a loving cup, Mary Lynch took second prize a beautiful doll, and Dolores Cote received a doll prize. Judges included Miss Helen Mudary Frances P Burke Emma Gotthardt Commander Joseph Glass and Chairman Wm Floyd. The Mardi Gras Committee thanks Winthrop citizens for support. A whist party followed on Shore Drive later in the week inviting broad participation.

Winthrop Post No. 146 American Legion volunteers to organize committees and manage Carnival details for September 8 9 and 10 at Ingleside Park. They cap off initial expenses with 200 dollars. Tom Brath chairs assisted by Winfield Kendrick treasurer George Downie secretary. Invitations sent to 40 clubs and organizations to appoint reps. Hospital Trustees President Leslie E. Griffin notes hospital progress and a deficit reduction, announcing a four month run at near capacity and ten operations in one day. Committee chairs named for grounds concessions features publicity finance citizens prize fireworks and tags. major gift is an automobile from hospital staff with other donations to follow. Next committee meeting set for Town Hall next Tuesday evening.

Police Officer Injured In Cliffside Crash At Winthrop
Patrolman Douglas suffered a severe shake up and multiple bruises after his car rolled off a cliff at Winthrop Highlands. He was rescued by Henry Stravides of Shirley Street and taken to Winthrop Community Hospital with probable internal injuries. his condition to be determined in coming days. Douglas is among the department’s oldest members and a brother of Lieutenant Frank H. Douglas of Winthrop practice.

Miss Fussell, a trained nurse from New England Baptist Hospital class of 1920, has served in public health nursing and as assistant superintendent at NEBH. She led Community Memorial Hospital in Ayer, Mass for two years as superintendent, succeeding Mrs. Mary Jahnle who resigns to pursue private hospital work at Winthrop Community Hospital, where she helped build its strong state reputation.

Edward Nowak of 20 Floyd Street Winthrop has been notified by the War Department that he will be decorated with the Purple Heart for wounds received in World War I. He is one of two New England ex-service members to earn the honor and among five nationwide to receive Poland’s Hallers Swords Medal for bravery.
