Old Man Fog and Ju piter Pluvius battered the Legion circus with heavy rain and a soaked tent. Despite setbacks, Commander Peirce and the crew chose to move the remaining performance to Monday to salvage the event and honor ticket buyers.
Fifty or more Winthrop girls enjoyed the fifth annual outing to Revere Beach under Center Playground directors Miss Helen Troy Smith and Miss Esther Segal. Free tickets via Mr Charles Ridgway. activities included Pit Thunderbolt Chute Chutes Aeroplane Whirl and supervised bathing before returning to Winthrop at 4 30 PM.
The town's new one story fireproof garage on Winthrop street will be occupied next week, costing 11116 and housing 25 cars. Selectman Joshua Remby led the effort with Frank Whitman and Joseph Hodgkins. the project was built by local workers and eliminates fire hazards while saving town funds.
A former Winthrop boy preached at St John s Episcopal Church in Howell Michigan. Rev Donald Veale rector of St John s Church Howell is brother of Grant Veale of Winthrop. Veale previously lived on Vine Avenue and sang in St John s choir under Eugene Whittier. Others connected include Richard McClintock now at Episcopal Theological School and Samuel McPhetres at St John s College and Seminary in Greeley Colorado.
The town completed the underground fire alarm system this week under Superintendent Joseph H. Poor Jr. An appropriation of 9000 was voted at the last town meeting, with total projected cost around 19000. Wires are now largely underground in telephone ducts, improving reliability and reducing costly fire runs caused by storms and ground faults.
Selectmen vote two to one to hire Arthur C. Comey of Cambridge to lead the town zoning revision begun under the March meeting. Planning Board cites Comey’s wide city planning experience and aims for hearings by fall with a report ready for a potential special fall meeting.
