The Hermon street Legion hosts a chest key contest offering 100 dollars to the finder if a key unlocks the chest by 9 PM Saturday August 14. So far no key has opened the chest and the proceeds go to the Community Hospital. The Legion meets nightly to allow participants to try their keys and show appreciation for hospital aid.
Winthrop Boy Scouts spend vacation at Camp Kenosa Imesbury Mass. Next month more boys will go for healthy recreation. Parents urged to send their boys and obtain details from Commissioner Winfield S Kendrick Jr or Scout Executive Campbell of this town.
Representative Edgar Power of this town sustained the veto of the hawkers and peddlers bill vetoed by Governor Fuller. He opposed the measure on grounds of fairness to local merchants and spoke against it on the floor, contributing to the veto being sustained after Senate overruled. Local merchants praise Power for protecting their business from out of town firms.
Patrolman George W. McNaught Frank Hogan and Richard Sexton were notified to report to Boston Police Headquarters for active duty after passing the Civil Service examination. Winthrop has supplied several men to the Boston Police, showing local training is valuable for advancement.
Jeremiah Green was granted by the Board of Selectmen a permit to keep and store gasoline in two 500 gallon tanks at his garage on the corner of Crest Avenue and Revere Street. The granting was without opposition.
Reginald Welles of Winthrop spotted a white whale off Deer Island near Boston Harbor while cruising his motorboat Spook. Several boats gathered to watch as the whale played and rolled in the water, estimated at about 20 feet long, and remained visible 20 minutes after he left.
Winthrop police led by Chief William A. McNeill conducted an unannounced raid on a drug store at 1 Pauline Street. Hyman Goldberg was arrested after officers seized a small quantity of alcohol and charged with keeping and unlawfully selling liquor. case continued after a court appearance.
The town will hold a public hearing in the Board of Selectmen on Monday August 6 at 8 p m to decide plans for widening Somerset avenue a six store block permit sits in abeyance until a decision is made. The traffic committee urges a one way conversion and widening from 40 to 55 feet with traffic congestion a chief concern.
During a hot spell last week the air reached 90 degrees while Winthrop Beach water hovered around 60 degrees. The week’s water ranged near 62 degrees with a high of 66 degrees on Sunday. few bathers lingered, even as the air stayed oppressive.

The Board of Registrars announced September 4 as registration day for Winthrop with a second September registration date to be announced. About 400 to 500 names were dropped from the voting list due to removals, and new arrivals are expected to boost the list. Registrars expect a busy session and urge citizens to register to vote in the Presidential election.
