A dispute arises in Winthrop over location near Woodside Avenue as the Tenement House Act of 1912 is invoked. Sponsors seek 50 three and four room apartments costing 200000 to 250000, but town officials demand submitted plans and adherence to the act before a permit is issued.
Rep Edgar F Power of this town objects to the censure of William M Forgrave by the Massachusetts General Court. The House voted 97 to 93 to adopt minority recommendations of the liquor investigating committee censuring Forgrave and denying him legislative access.
Fred Gardner Smith of Chester Avenue filed nomination papers with the Town Clerk for the Republican State Committee. He has served as Secretary of the Winthrop Republican Town Committee since 1921, and there is no prior recollection of a Winthrop candidate for this state committee.
G Wallace Tibbetts of 160 Grover Avenue announces his run for the Republican State Committee. A former vice president of the state Republican club and bank official in Boston he has been active in Liberty Loan drives Red Cross town government and public welfare committees. Primaries set for Tuesday September 18 in the first senatorial district covering Chelsea Revere Saugus and Winthrop.
At the Ford Motor Plant in Somerville, F. D. Ross of 24 Quincy Avenue and several co workers fell ill after eating a daily box lunch. They suffered severe stomach pains, with some losing consciousness, and were rushed to Somerville Hospital for treatment.
The Elks lodge hosts a Birthday Carnival at the Elks' Home and Grounds Friday August 3 at 7 00 p m and Saturday August 4 from 9 00 a m to 11 45 p m with concerts entertainments and novelties A 2 00 p m Saturday feature includes New England amateur swimming races under NEA A sanction plus six championship events for men and women and two open events for Winthrop youths A Movie Contest is also planned Tickets are on sale through lodge members chaired by Sewell Verney Past Exalted Ruler for two evenings and a day of entertainment for all ages.
The town may accept an offer to sell a steam roller bought about eleven years ago for street work. It has not been used in three years and sits in the town shed. No licensed engineer is on staff, so usage was limited. The offer is considered acceptable.
Chairman Alfred Tewksbury of the Board of Assessors reports Winthrop’s population on April 1 this year at 15,625, up from 15,238 a year earlier, a net increase of 387. He asserts the Assessors’ list provides an accurate count amid townwide population debates.
John Conroy, a 27 year old prisoner at Deer Island, fled around midnight Tuesday via a boat landing toward the Winthrop shore. He is described as medium complexion, brown hair, grey eyes, about five eight, wearing a brown soft hat, white shirt, blue pencil striped trousers and tan shoes.
Fire swept the Playstead station of the Nar Tow Gauge railroad in Winthrop early Thursday morning. A spark from a locomotive believed to be retired for electric motors started the blaze, seen by Patrolman Gallagher and fought by firefighters, who extinguished it after a brief roof fire.
A joint meeting of the Board and committees discussed widening Somerset Avenue from Woodside Avenue to Cottage Park Road. Plans favored a 15 foot setback and a 55 foot street, with one proposal for a 4 foot street and center island rejected. The Street Corner Widening Committee continues work pending a building permit for a corner lot development.
Sigfrid Swenson, 50, of 45 Shore Drive Winthrop, died at Salem Hospital after a afternoon crash on the Newburyport turnpike summit near the State Hospital. His car struck a sedan owned by Cacia Heel Ceauane of Newburyport. Swenson was thrown through the windshield with a throat wound. Pollard suffered a leg cut and his daughter Gage, 11, was cut above the left eye. Swenson said steering failure caused him to veer out of line past two machines.
