Albert R. Stedfast longtime chairman of the School Committee marks forty years with Hill, Clarke & Co. in Boston from 1884 to 1924. He recalls changes in machine tools and sales, naming Amos Whitney and others as industry forebears, while noting Westward growth and progress in the field.
Ed mund R. Belcher of 228 Main Street, a Winthrop Water Dept. employee, acted quickly when a 3 year old girl became trapped in a trolley car door at Central Square Lynn. He signaled motorman Arthur Guest to stop and open the door, freeing Susie Poland of 3 Clough Street with only bad bruises.
Spectators and dignitaries attended a gala celebration at a Great Pier off Groversav during Winthrop High Lands Association day. The event featured hospitality from local figures including Col Geo A Reade and Navy and Coast Guard representatives, with many homes decorated and flags flying.
News reached Winthrop on Tuesday that the steamship Boston had a serious accident. Several Winthrop residents were aboard and relatives sought word of the dead. Names mentioned include Charles L. Copeland, Samuel Arvedon, Mrs Murray, and Captain Albert W Call among others.
The 75 foot cruising power boat Kanawha owned by Almon E. Whittemore caught fire Friday night July 18 in the engine room and spread to the cabin. Damage is estimated at $8000 with 600 gallons of gasoline aboard. Whittemore McCarthy and Nichols acted to battle the blaze as firefighters battled flames for over an hour.
