Fort Banks Boxing Night Delivers Five Bouts
Boxing fans saw five bouts at Fort Banks on Monday night. Johnny Ross defeated Al Morgan in the opener. Ed Thomas faced Billy Caine in a strong bout that ended early in the third, Tiger Flowers strong in later rounds. Tommy Hammon beat Freddie Russo over six rounds. Tommy Duffy edged Gene Rochane in an eight round semi final. final bout saw Buddy Jenkins hold off Tommy Clayton in eight slow rounds.

George N Hayward of 90 Washington Ave died at home on Tuesday July 20 after weeks of illness from hardening of the arteries. He was born in Gilsum New Hampshire aged 82 and worked with Mason & Hamlin Organ Co for over 50 years. Funeral Thursday at his Winthrop home conducted by Rev M Owen Whitman Eames with Maud Murray singing, interment in Winthrop Cemetery.

A Winthrop High School graduate class of 1925, he excelled in the Science and Debating Clubs and led his class basketball team with eight wins and six losses. Edward’s path included Navy enlistment, Newport Naval Preparatory School, and Hampton Roads Annapolis Prep, now advancing in Annapolis duties.

Historic 1862 order enlists six men for Massachusetts service
A rare document found by John McNaught preserves Special Order 474 issued July 17 1862 from Boston Headquarters. It authorizes Winthrop selectmen to recruit six men for U S regiments with a two dollar premium per recruit and outlines reporting, recruitment standards and transportation under Adjutant General supervision. Governor John A. Andrew signs the order with Assistant Adjutant General William Brown.

Review Staff Outing to Provincetown on Dorothy Bradford
