Governor's Island Dispute Postponed Indefinitely

Mayor Gurley postponed development and the East Bastern Airport extension on Monday night, citing the city’s inability to complete satisfactory negotiations with the federal government. The War Department’s position remains unresolved as officials await further talks.

Winthrop Yacht Club Opens Mid-Summer Carnival

The Winthrop Yacht Club held its Mid-Summer Carnival opening Thursday in the Shirley Street clubhouse. The event runs this evening and Saturday afternoon and evening with decorated halls booths and flags inviting public attendance.

Final Tribute Is Paid N F Daw

Northan F Daw of Winthrop buried with full military honors at St John s Church aged 31. He died Friday from wounds suffered while serving with the second division of marines in France. Born in Winthrop he attended local schools and enlisted at the outbreak of the war. A pharmacist s mate he helped administer first aid to wounded soldiers and was wounded four times. He was decorated for bravery and later became a traveling salesman and sales manager for the De Forest Radio Tube Corporation of New York. He returned home a week ago and was celebrated for his courage and personality. Continued on Page 8

VFW Mardi Gras Opens Monday for 12 Nights

The Richard F. Metcalf Post No. 1664 will stage its second annual Mardi Gras at Winthrop Shore Drive starting Monday evening July 13 for 12 nights. The Sheeley family of divers will perform Baby Sheeley and back somersault dives into a flaming tank. Amateur diving contests, nightly prize drawings, and a search for Mr. Mardi Gras offer additional entertainment. Proceeds go to post repairs from winter storms and the Disabled Veterans Fund.

Water deemed safe for Winthrop public bathing after tests

Winthrop residents are assured bathing is safe after the State Department of Public Health examined samples taken along the Boston harbor shore. Dredging near College Park Yacht Club prompted rumors of contamination, which were denied by the local Board of Health. The department's analysis confirms no contamination from dredging, and the board sought official confirmation for doubly sure.

Veterans' employment preference debate at town meeting

About 36 to 40 veterans appeared before the Board of Selectmen to seek preferential hiring under Massachusetts law. They alleged that Winthrop officials did not follow the rule, reporting daily crowds at the town shed and veterans being turned away while non veterans were picked for work. The dispute was noted as continuing on page 8.

Award Contract For Fort Banks Hospital Ex Change Work

A contract for the Post Hospital Exchange and alterations at Fort Banks was awarded to M. Spinelli and Son of 333 Washington Street Boston. The contract amount calls for an expenditure of 144 thousand nine hundred dollars this week.
