The January 20 bond drive kickoff featured a High School supper prepared by Miss MacPherson and students, with Treasury reps speaking on the drive and a $1000 bond purchase. A future War Bond Auction and a wave of donations, including bonds and goods, were announced to boost Winthrop beyond its $470,000 quota. Residents urged to buy bonds in Winthrop or reallocate to it to reach the top.
Edwin J. Pease of 105 Grovers Ave Winthrop was elected secretary of the Mutual Boiler Insurance Co of Boston succeeding John A. Collins who served since 1909. Pease joined the company in 1930 and has been assistant secretary since 1932. He is active in Winthrop public safety work and served as Blackout Officer.
The Quest and Question Club will meet Tuesday February 1 at 2 PM at Mrs. George B. Clarke's home 40 Washington Ave. Mrs. Leslie L Dunham will give a talk on The American Home Cornerstone of Democracy.
Mr and Mrs Anthony C Clorio announce the engagement of Dolly Marie to Willard Turner U S Marines The announcement records a marriage prospect with military service noted and family names in a local society brief.
The Garden Club of Winthrop met January 17 at Mrs. Leslie Griffin’s home with guest speaker George Marler from Idaho Falls representing the Audubon Society of America. He lectured on America’s migratory birds and showed slides of native species, urging preservation. awards were given for corsages to Mrs. Carl Root, Miss Hazel Hayden, and Mrs. Nelson Hayden. The next meeting will feature a Valentine Tea to be announced later.
The Winthrop Girl Scout Council with Troop Leaders will hold a dessert luncheon, bridge and whist at Pleasant Park Yacht Club on Monday February 14 at 1 p m. Mrs Hugh Miller 66 Sargent Street is chairman. Tickets cost 55 cents including tax and can be bought from any council member or troop leader.
Fred J Devereux wed in Washington at the Shrine of the Sacred Heart on January 18. Marguerite A Finnegan became the bride of Richard F Devereux, son of Fred J Devereux and his wife. The groom is a Boston College 1941 alumus. The newlyweds plan to live in Atlanta after a brief honeymoon.
Paul Swift of 103 Locust Street Winthrop Massachusetts is promoted to captain in the Eighth Bomber Command. As a squadron leader he has flown missions over Bremen Paris Gelsenkirchen and Stuttgart. He was wounded on a Stuttgart mission and earned the Purple Heart and Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters. He enlisted in 1942 after serving as a radio electrician at the Boston Navy Yard.
The Littlefield-Philathea Class met January 19, 1944, at First Baptist Church with President Evelyn Brooke presiding. A quiz program directed by Hester Kempton followed the business session. Refreshments were served by Myrt le Cobb and assistants Gilda Hickler Elaine Tibbetts Elizabeth Palmana and Helen Deming.
A small change purse containing money was found near Lewis Lake last Friday. The owner may reclaim it by presenting identification and the contents at the local police station.
Massachusetts allows property tax exemptions for service members families on homes valued under 5000 dollars. Applications require means testing to show hardship and must be filed before February first to affect the 1.44 tax. Consult the Board of Assessors for details and forms. At the annual Cottage Park Yacht Club meeting, Commodore Francis P. Madden, Vice Commodore Kenneth S. Magoon, Treasurer Roy W. Pigeon, and Secretary George A. Wickson were elected along with a two year Board of Directors. Regatta and Entertainment Committees were named, and the Coast Guard Auxiliary’s use of club facilities boosted activity under Lt. Ken Magoon.
Edgar F. Power longtime state representative and civic figure died Wednesday at his home 19 Lowell Road. He was active in trotting horse circles in New England as a driver and official. He is survived by his wife Alice M. Power. Funeral services will be held Saturday at Bennison Funeral Home 174 Winthrop Street at 2 p.m.
The January 21 meeting of the USO-Winthrop Soldiers and Sailors Committee approved the Secretary and Treasurer reports. The Greater Boston USO will fund 1944 operations with monthly checks, and donations for a radio attract added to the club. Plans include dances at various forts and a President's Ball on January 29 and a Valentine dance February 14.
Announcement from Dr. Harry H. Sandler of 178 Washington Ave states that on Tuesday and Friday the hours 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. will be reserved exclusively for children's dentistry and orthodontia.
Winthrop’s Fourth War Loan Drive reports $114000 in sales in the first three days, with 25 percent of the quota met. Town leaders including Mil ton Band and Walter Smith mobilize schools, local firms, and coast guard members for a major bond auction planned for February 9 1944. Donors include the Zionist District and Congregation Tifereth Israel, each presenting bonds for auction, plus donated helmets and gear from state and local groups.
Collector of Internal Revenue Denis W Delaney named chairman of the Birthday Ball committee to be held at the Boston Garden on Friday night January 28. Proceeds benefit infantile paralysis research and victims with Governor Saltonstall as honorary state chairman and Edmund J Brandon as honorary vice chairman. Swede Nelson will serve as vice chairman of the Suffolk county committee.
