Death of Civil War Vet Amos L. Barnes Mourned
Amos L. Barnes a Winthrop Civil War veteran and former attendance officer died after a short illness at 158 Hermon street. He served in the 46th Massachusetts Infantry, enlisted 1861, discharged 1863. Funeral services were held at the Bennison residence with G A R ritual and firing squad. He is survived by two brothers and a sister.

The John Whorf exhibition drew strong local praise despite bad weather. The hall filled with supporters who appreciated works depicting Brittany France Spain and Morocco. About 75 paintings were shown including Brittany Quai at Douarnenez Fishing Boats A Bit of Old Concarneau Nuit Calme and Rue Des Pistons.

90th Birthday Observed by Centenarian Resident
Miss Elizabeth Leeds Tewksbury of Winthrop celebrated her 90th birthday on January 22. A lifelong resident, she was born in Point Shirley in 1833 and moved to Great Head in 1854. She is the last surviving member of her father’s family and has long been connected with the Unitarian Church in Winthrop.
