The Dolan family of 19 Beach Rd. endured a sequence of misfortune after a molasses tank exploded. Gerald A. Dolan died during a return from France, Ralph Martin died from burns and injuries, and Walter J. Dolan’s truck and driver were lost in the blast. Mrs. Dolan’s father Michael Sinnott, a Civil War veteran, resided at 70 Bernard St. Dorchester.
Lieut Darius A Ives returns from 18 months Navy service and now leads all bands at Newport Naval Training Station He expanded and standardized instrumentation to boost mass singing and band strength He previously led the Massachusetts Naval Brigade band and lives at 27 Center Street He is a member of Winthrop Elks.
The Post Office Department reports the initial supply of 1919 war-savings certificates is being sent to postmasters at central and direct accounting offices as received from the printer. Postmasters should not telegraph or write for extra supply.
Letter from Arthur W Rowe of Winthrop Mass dated January 17 1919 urges a municipal gymnasium with indoor and outdoor swimming facilities on the waterfront to honor Winthrop sons who served in World War One. He envisions Liberty Hall to inscribe names of the fallen and enlistees while providing youth facilities.
Grand jury charges Herbert F Jeffery of Revere with seven major house-breaking incidents in Winthrop. Names of victims include John Lapham George Perkins Frank Lewis Harry Oakes Ellen Powers Eliza Bristol and Bart Ahearn. Most cases report property recovered and Jeffery to face open court within days.
Winthrop Theatre ad notes Senator John B. Beck has announced candidacy for State Treasurer next fall. The five year term restricts reelection, clearing the field for Burrill to step out. Frederick H. Pierce of Greenfield also runs, popular in western districts.
The new Bert Ayers Bowling Alleys at 491 Shirley Street Winthrop Beach will prioritize lady bowlers at opening. Special weekly prices will be offered to attract customers.
Town Clerk Preston Churchill requests information on residents who served in the Army Navy or other World War I branches for a permanent town record. Relatives and friends are urged to cooperate and send details to the Town Hall at the earliest opportunity.
Winthrop residents learn Dr Edward J Grainger of Adams Street is serving in France as a lieutenant in the Medical Corps. He was chosen to head lung disease work at Base Hospital 66 in Paris after being selected from 400 doctors examined for the task. He directs care for troops exposed to gas and lung trouble.
