About 200 residents met at the Winthrop Theatre on Sunday January 8 to back a move to convert Metcalf Hospital into a community institution. Chairman Charles J Brown reported progress, with a full report due January 22.

Wedding marks 25th anniversary at Hicks Metcalf home
On Saturday evening January 7 at the home of Dr and Mrs Ben Hicks Metcalf at 170 Winthrop Street friends celebrated the twenty fifth anniversary of their marriage. A reception and music followed by luncheon honored Dr and Mrs Metcalf who wed January 7 1897 in West Roxbury. They have two children Richard F killed in France July 1918 and Carolyn a college student. Gifts included a silver covered platter and carving set from longtime friends. The observance ended at midnight with letters noted.

Two Rescues Near Lewis Lake by Douglas and Friedman
A little girl on Lewis Lake near Washington Ave cried as her brother fell through ice. Jack Friedman and then Mrs. Alfred Henry helped pull out three year old Richard O Donoghue who was revived at Metcalf Hospital and later returned home. Police Lieutenant Douglas credited for the rescue, though only wet his hands.

Lieut Douglas Rescues Boy From Ice Break at Beach Station
Lieut James H Douglas at Beach Station heard a boy cry for help and rushed to the water. He found eight year old Lawrence Sheinson clinging to a rope as ice cakes drifted. Douglas crawled out on a plank and pulled the boy to safety at 24 Trident Avenue. The rescue showcased quick action and bravery.
