The Winthrop Post 146 urges local employers to hire unemployed veterans from the 1109 men who served during the War. Commander Albert S. Smith and Adjutant Frances L. Sheehan say they will connect veterans with jobs and match needs with qualified workers.
Dr. Thomas E. Pigott died suddenly Sunday January 8 at his home 48 Pearl St No. Woburn from apoplexy. Born in Winthrop, he moved to No. Woburn five years ago after a long tenure with American Telephone and Telegraph Co. He leaves his wife three sons Thomas Jr Arthur and Edgar and two daughters Katherine and Madeleine. Funeral at St Anthony's No. Woburn followed by interment at Holyhood Cemetery.
The Winthrop Hospital committee reports after eight meetings that two options will be presented: alter and add to Metcalf Hospital or build a new fireproof facility on a new site. A Sunday meeting at the Winthrop Theatre on January 22 will print the full facts for citizen consideration. The group notes broad public support for hospital facilities but stresses costs and site must be decided by residents.
On Wednesday night the Winthrop theatre drew crowds as S. R. O. signs were needed for five acts of top line vaudeville by Charles L. Hatch. The new feature earned thunderous applause and Hatch plans to present only the best vaudeville each week.
Mrs Charles Leslie May of Loring road led the District Clubwomen's meeting in Revere on Wednesday, guiding discussions and proceedings of the gathering.
A local grocer reports a nighttime burglary yielding cash and checks while a separate case tracks two 11 or 12 year old boys found with train tickets to Brooklyn. The youths confessed to House of Mercy care and return home under juvenile court supervision after police traced their journey from New York to Boston.
Tim othy A. McCarthy of Edgehill road exposed a self described water meter thief. John S. Bruder of Winthrop Avenue confessed and was arrested after visiting two cellars and posing as a water inspector. Reports of broken meters tied to Annie McCarthy, Crocker, Hesenius, Hammond and Muldoon homes prompted police pursuit.
