Winthrop launches enrollment push for the Greater Boston United War Fund campaign led by Chairman George J Hamilton. Varsity Club Captain Hurt In Fall From Freight Car

Walter Wally Butler captain and second baseman of Winthrop Varsity Club baseball fell from a freight car at the Boston and Maine yard in Somerville. He suffered scalp lacerations serious injuries and the loss of fingers on his left hand. Butler walked to the shed before collapsing and received a blood transfusion from his father. Doctors expect possible return home within a week.

Canvass of Town Aims to Recruit Civil Defense Workers

A 150 volunteers will canvass the town this Sunday to enlist patriotic citizens for life and property protection in air raid and other emergencies. Percy L. Sterling chairs the effort, overseen by the general committee’s executive group. Willard Noyes of the Winthrop Civilian Defense Committee will lead the canvass.

Bombs and Civilian Defense Talk Draws Large Winthrop Audience

About 600 citizens packed the Winthrop Senior High auditorium for an ARP session in which John DiMento explained the action and effects of incendiary, high explosive, fragmentation and other bombs. The article previews upcoming talks on gas, a gas chamber demonstration, and weekly ARP meetings to organize civilian defense efforts.

Special Town Meeting on January 19 in Winthrop

The Board of Selectmen announces a special town meeting for Monday evening January 19 at the Junior High School to consider an article for an appropriation for civilian defense and other articles. The civilian defense committee led by Percy L Sterling seeks funds to maintain protection of life and property with cost controls. Other articles include electing one selectman per three years, Reverest and Grovers bridge repairs, a ban on BB air rifles unless registered, and a no parking rule during snow storms.

Union Congregational Church Postpones Meeting to Aid ARP School

Reverend Carl Smith announces the Union Congregational Church annual meeting is moved from Tuesday to Wednesday January 14 to accommodate members enrolled in the Town Defense Course and to enable attendance at the ARP School. About twenty members are involved, and organizers expect mutual benefit.
