Winthrop Legion Post Seeks 1941 Plates Salvage Drive

Winthrop Post 146 of the American Legion launches a drive to salvage 1941 Massachusetts license plates. Motorists are asked to deposit old plates in three designated boxes, tied in pairs, for possible reissue in 1943. About 800 tons of steel could be released for defense use, with a goal of collecting most plates by January 15.

Red Cross Roll Call Near Goal In Winthrop Drive

Nurses Aide Course To Be Initiated By Red Cross

Parishioners of St John s Episcopal church save small coins in boxes each summer for a Heating Fund to warm the church and parish house in winter A box was accidentally mailed to Mrs Anna Silberberg wife of a missionary in Tanana Alaska In a December 10 letter to the rector she jokes that her Christmas gift must also cover the Heating Fund since her son Wilfred Jr chewed the box and enjoyed the toy involved

Red Cross First Aid Instructor Jo Wyman calls Winthrop residents who completed local First Aid Courses to join Civilian Defense by sending name address and phone to 162 Washington Ave. He plans to form units assigned to staffed stations in stores clubs or homes for emergency care. Feast of the Holy Name Observed Across Catholic World

Sunday January 4th marks the Feast of the Holy Name with St John the Evangelist parishioners urged to receive Holy Communion at 8 30 Mass for Holy Name Society members who died this year. A New Year candle light service at First Church of Winthrop Methodist promises music and pageantry. The Twelve Lights of the Year features twelve costumed girls. Local Ham Radio Operators Win Naval Commendation

Stewart S Perry and B H Chace of Winthrop are among thirteen New England hams in the First Naval District to receive letters of commendation from the Naval Operations office in Washington for perfect copies of a radiotelegraph message broadcast to U S and Insular Possessions on Navy Day. The annual receiving contest is run by the American Radio Relay League at West Hartford Conn with results passed to the Chief of Naval Operations. The special message was sent at about 25 words per minute after a five minute CQ call.

Volunteers To Register For Winthrop Defense Committee

More than 500 volunteers are urged to register at three Winthrop centers to join the local defense effort. Registration runs next Tuesday and Thursday from 7 30 to 9 30 p m at Centre High School Beach Community Building and Highlands Ham s Highland Store with two young ladies at each site. Willard Noyes leads the effort guiding local citizens to offer time to defense activities.

Civil Defense ARP School Shows War Realities

Winthrop residents attended the second ARP School session at Shirley Street School where two films Theyre Dropping Incendiaries and Warning depicted incendiary bombs and London air raids. Edwin B Pease led a talk on blackouts as citizens learned firefighting methods and duties for civilian defense in emergencies.
