Reports in Winthrop on Wednesday claimed Albert R. Stedfast former school committee chairman now in Newton had died. Stedfast called the reports grossly exaggerated and said he still knows many young fellows who cannot keep up. Friends in Winthrop will be thankful for the clarification.
Marian L Lawrence Higgins will be guest speaker at the Florence Crittenton open meeting. She will present "Keeping House for Uncle Sam" at Beacon Villa on Monday January 9 at 2 PM. Tea will follow and members are urged to attend and invite friends.
The Temple Israel Institute for 1939 kicks off on Wednesday evening January 11 at 8 15 in the Temple Israel Meeting House Boston Longwood avenue and Riverway. Eight lectures run every Wednesday through March 1 under the Adnit Educational Program focusing on Religion in Action and related topics. The final lecture ponders The Horizons of Religion Which Way.
Returns from Christmas Seals are ahead of last year for the same period, says Mrs. H. W. Farquhar, chairman of the Winthrop Tuberculosis Committee. Once all Seals mailed out are accounted for, those who can contribute should do so at once, and those unable to give are asked to help by returning their Seals.
A gospel team from Boston University School of Theology begins a series of four Sunday services at the First Church of Winthrop. The schedule includes Young People’s Meeting at 6 30 p m and the 7 30 p m worship. Members come from Kansas Maryland Kentucky New York and Japan. The church expects strong interest from both youths and adults.
The Union Congregational Church sets Cottage meetings in multiple homes next Sunday at 7 30 p m. Locations include Judson A Young 20 Sagamore Street High Lands Brock 29 Thornton Park Center Kendall New Winthrop Hotel Beach Rowe Snow 70 Faun Bar Cottage Hill and Robt Allen 19 Brewster Street Point Shirley.
The Quest and Question Club will hold its first New Year meeting January 10 at 1 PM at Mrs. Ralph Oxton's home, 389 Pleasant Street. Dale Carnegie's Five Minute Autobiographies of Famous People will be presented by the Literature Committee chaired by Mrs. Halsey W. Kelley.
Commodore George J. Hamilton of the Pleasant Park Yacht Club was re elected to head the organization for the coming year at the twenty ninth annual sailors meeting held at the clubhouse Tuesday evening. Officers elected include Francis W Perrault vice commodore Fred Hagemiester treasurer Charles E Lyons secretary James R Hennessey and Arthur J Soper directors for 2 years Wilbur L Halliday director for 1 year. A buffet lunch followed the election and committee reports.
Harry E. Sawtell, longtime Winthrop resident born in Keene New Hampshire in 1873, died Tuesday at Winthrop Community Hospital after an attack. He chaired the town building laws revision committee and supported local Republican groups. Survived by wife Cora P Sawtell daughter Mrs William A Taylor and 1 grandchild. Funeral Friday at 2 pm Union Congregational Church interment Mt Auburn Cambridge.
The Union Congregational Church of Winthrop plans a School of Religion led by Dr. Ruth Miller of Boston University School of Religious Education. The program, postponed to February 19 to align with Larry services, aims to train leaders for local and broader church work, focusing on a weekend so High School students can attend. The pastor and Miss Vivian Bartlett promote the effort. other teachers will be announced later.
John W. Fielding former chairman of the Advisory Committee announces plans to seek election to the Board of Assessors at the March town election. A World War veteran born in East Boston and longtime resident of Winthrop, he has held multiple civic roles including secretary and chair on town committees and aided traffic regulation and safety projects. Nomination papers are circulating among supporters.
The Board of Selectmen of Winthrop thanks citizens for the splendid display of lights and decorations during the Christmas season. It commends the town for expressing heart and mind through festive homes and wishes peace on earth and goodwill toward men. Signed by Selectmen David Belcher Roy W. Pigeon and Walter G. Baker.
Great interest shown in 230 courses scheduled by the Division of University Extension for winter months. Thirty are new, with topics from History and Technique of Radio Broadcasting to Training for Doctors Secretaries. The Motion Picture Council schedules its next meeting for Monday January 9 at 3 o'clock in the Town Hall Hearing Room.
The Baptist, Congregational, Episcopal and Methodist churches host Charles R. Scott to speak at morning services and lead a youth conference in the afternoon. Scott, former Y M C A youth secretary in New Jersey, helped compile Larry’s letters and poems and tours nationally after a Pennsylvania stop drawing about three thousand youths.
Colonial Chapter No. 96 of the Order of Eastern Star will hold its annual meeting and install officers at Masonic Hall on Thursday evening January 5. A catered supper at 6 30 p m precedes installation at 8 o clock. Sixty four members who have twent y five years of belonging to the club will be guests of honor at a Friday afternoon gathering in Ellis Hall. Dessert will be served at one o'clock by Mrs Theodore C Naedele and committee. Mrs Jesse F Dolloff will present Sidney N Shurcliff in an illustrated lecture on The Restoration of Williamsburg. Shurcliff, a landscape architect, aided in Williamsburg work. The Art Corner will feature fourteen paintings by Massachusetts artists.
The Office of the Superintendent of Schools announces Americanization Classes for adult immigrants will be held at Shirley Street School Winthrop Beach on Tuesday and Thursday evenings starting January 5 1939. The high school Evening School will reopen on January 5 1939 in the Senior Med School building.
The annual meeting of St John’s Episcopal parish will be held in the Parish House on Monday evening January 9.
