Lewis Block Firefighting Stand-Still in Historic Winthrop Blaze
Winthrop firemen fought the worst blaze in department history at the Lewis Block last Monday morning. The fire started in the W. C. Ham Co. store and smoke filled the top floor where Mrs. C. O. Whitney lived. Firemen battled thick fumes and ammonia as flames darted between walls. Several men were knocked out. Lieut. Perkins remained hospitalized hours later. Damage runs about 40 thousand dollars. the block’s tenants and owners faced heavy losses. Ham’s Beach store will reopen after repairs. the fourth store in the candy and ice cream chain resumes weekly specials.

Next Sunday at 9:30 p.m. the Winthrop Spanish War Veterans meet at the Maine Boulder in Metcalf Square to honor the U S S Maine crew killed in Havana Harbor on February 15, 1898. It marks the 27th anniversary with a wreath placed on the copper tablet from the battleship.

Hydrant Hit Sparks Flooding on Shirley Street
Sunday evening about 11 30 an unknown car struck a hydrant in front of 590 Shirley Street. The hydrant broke off flush with the ground causing a geyser to flood the street before a water department crew repaired the damage and shut off water beyond Underhill Street.
