Santa Claus Delivers Joyful Christmas Eve in Winthrop

A festive Santa Claus led a dozen plus car parade through Winthrop on Christmas Eve, towering high in a sleigh drawn by reindeer. The event, sponsored by Charles R. Bennison of 170 Winthrop Street, drew thousands of residents and ended with youngsters visiting Bennison’s rear yard to glimpse the sleigh and gifts.

Winthrop Christmas Spirit Shines Over Bennison Homes

Fogs failed to dampen Winthrop residents on Christmas Eve as bright lights and festive decor lit homes across town. The standout display surrounded Charles R. Bennison at 170 Winthrop Street and the adjacent Community Hospital nurses’ home, with trees, garlands, and electric lights in multiple colors creating a joyful scene.

Santa Hosts First Drama League Christmas Party

Santa Claus arrives to hand out candy bags as youngsters at Oddeliggs Hall enjoy a 2:30 p m Christmas party hosted by Winthrop Drama League directed by L Paul Scott. Margaret Gardner Helen Verney Ross Gilchrist and Helen Moller entertain with stories tap dancing and carols.

Crash injures Doris Fisher on Johnson avenue

On Christmas Day at about seven in the evening Doris Fisher of 26 Circuit road drove along Johnson avenue and collided with a parked unoccupied car owned by Alfred Fearing. The impact toppled the car. neighbors freed Fisher as emergency aid arrived.

Community Carollers Draw Large Turnout For Christmas Eve Concert

Assisted by the Winthrop Post American Legion Band the Community Carollers held their first program of music Christmas Eve at 11 30 o clock from the steps of the Methodist Church Metcalf Square before a large gathering of townspeople. Before the gathering on the church steps carollers toured town singing to small groups and spreading Christmas joy to many unable to attend the square concert. They also sang at the Community Hospital as part of their caroling rounds.

Commodore George J. Hamilton of the Pleasant Park Yacht Club announces a New Year’s dance and dinner at the clubhouse on Sunday evening from 9:30 to 2:00 A M for members and friends.

Winthrop Endures Severe Snowstorm Disrupts Travel

Local work crews under Superintendent T. J. Mahaney kept main streets clear as Winthrop fared better than nearby towns during a 10 inch southeast snowstorm. Boston, Revere Reach & Lynn Railroad maintained service, autos abandoned in drifts, and police aided drivers along the Narrow Gauge. Two men collapsed from strain. a town official sought rest at a private hotel after digging from a stalled car. A trophy presentation by Winthrop Post closes the day at the station.

Stronger Liquor Licenses Sought By Town Board

The Board of Selectmen, reversing a prior stance, voted to consider licenses for beer and wine above 3.2 percent alcohol content. If correct, permits would apply to current 3.2 licensees, allow sales by bottle or over the counter, and remain in effect until January 1, 1935, regardless of March town election results.

Winthrop Women Hit by CWA Program Details

Winthrop women are set to receive nearly $9000 by February 15 under the Civil Works Administration job program. Local director Mrs Muldoon reports women were placed in municipal projects to employ the unemployed, with initial job distribution and outreach conducted through the town facilities and Main Street stables.

Dancing Party By Order of Rainbow
