Mr and Mrs Charles R Bennison again host a grand Christmas display at 170 Winthrop Street showcasing an enlarged electric presentation. Residents and visitors will be greeted by a festive scene on Christmas Eve as the Bennison residence lights illuminate the town.
The Board of Selectmen on Monday evening refused to reconsider granting permits for beer wine and liquor with high alcohol content. They stood by the prior decision not to issue any licenses under the new State Liquor Act and will wait until the regular town election in March.
A large turnout attended Sunday afternoon events at the American Legion Post as Patrick W. Barry of Winthrop was installed president of the American Legion Fathers of Massachusetts and William H Fielding became president of the Winthrop American Legion Fathers organization. Officers of both groups were inducted in a colorful ceremony reflecting community spirit and Christmas carols.
A poetic Christmas vignette describes Bethlehem in sleep and a radiant star heralding a Holy Child born to David's line. Kings arrive with gold and gems as crowds fill the inn and cattle shed, while the tender Babe seeks only humble hearts from earth. Preserved is the voice of Alice Marston.Seaman.
The Drama League of Winthrop invites all children to visit Odd Fellows Hall on Pauline Street this Saturday afternoon to meet Santa Claus. Children can shake hands with Santa and place toy orders for Christmas delivery via a radio link to his North Pole headquarters.
Harold Ro MacNamee was unanimously reelected president of the Winthrop Golf Club at the annual meeting and election of officers held Saturday evening at the club house. Mt. Scout Paine was chosen vice president and Willard Ni Hall secretary for the coming year. Continued.
At a town hall meeting Chairman Chaim Murray ordered foremen to report nonworkers and absentees on Civil Works sites. He announced over 200 locals sought jobs and warned that those failing to show daily would be discharged and replaced to ensure ongoing operations.
Members of Episcopal Church School present a short Christmas pageant in the Parish House after the service. The event features primary and kindergarten students with Miss Sallie A. Kelley organizing a children’s room for parents and children.
Public health and graduate registered nurses seeking reemployment on CWA and FERA projects should register with the Re-employment Manager in Winthrop and submit the graduate nurse application to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health in Boston. Winthrop needs at least two nurses, with priority to town residents, then county, then other state residents if needed.
The School Committee proposes a budget for 1934 with salaries and incidentals identical to 1933. Advisory Committees vote to maintain the five percent salary reduction carried through 1933 and instruct department heads to submit their 1934 salary budgets reflecting the same cut.
Winthrop prepares for a Christmas Eve concert at 10 30 PM in Mei calf Square. Citizens contribute wreaths holly candles and lights, with a growing display of holiday spirit and community activities noted as the season peaks.
The Methodist church presents a Christmas program with a 4:30 p.m. monthly musical service featuring Combined Choirs and a performance of Handel's The Messiah. Junior and senior choirs, under Carle W. Malley and Minnie H. Floyd, accompany a sermon titled Christmas in Low Mood.
St. John's Episcopal Church at Bowdoin and Buchanan Streets with Rector Ralph M. Harper announces the Fourth Sunday in Advent service at 11:00 a.m. Holy Communion at 9:30 a.m. Sunday school times listed, morning service and sermon at 10:45 a.m. Kindergarten and Primary 10:45 a.m. Evening service and sermon at 7:30 p.m. features Christmas Pageant Up the Road to Bethlehem.
The town is invited to a grand carol gathering on Christmas Eve at 10 30 P M on the steps of the Church. The Community Carol Singers lead the event inviting all local residents to attend.
