Town residents gather around a gayly decorated community tree to witness the arrival of Santa Claus on Christmas Eve. The festive event draws throngs to the home of J. Frank Rebuck as sparkles, music, and cheer fill the holiday scene.
A legion Christmas party drew many attendees with Santa Claus as a featured attraction.
Santa Claus arrived in Winthrop this year aboard an up to date monoplane that landed on the roof of J. Frank Parkway. He parked the plane there and then toured the town with Sie Sack Se Soa Cela goad.
A brief notice indicates that new shares are available with reduced charges or no extra cost during December. The messaging emphasizes economical thinking and limiting unnecessary expenditures to build savings.
President Gardner Wells questions the push for a rapid transit line as plans for consolidating narrow gauge and broader rail systems surface. He notes uncertainty over whether the proposed road will be built and how consolidation would unfold.
City of Boston public works commissioner James H. Sullivan announces toll hikes effective January 1 for East Boston ferry users. Passenger autos pay 20 cents plus extra per rider. four passengers stay at one cent. Trucks rise to 20 and 33 cents, buses 30 cents. 20 ticket packages discounted 20 percent. Winthrop motorists face higher fares.
Tony Belmonte of 23 Roosevelt Street Revere was arraigned in East Boston Court on a drunk driving charge after a Sunday crash on Revere Street near Highlands Bridge. Albert Stein of East Boston and Bonito of East Boston suffered injuries as their cars collided. Belmonte's case was continued for one week at the government's request.
A public hearing will be held in the Town Hall hearing room in early January on a land taking at the Sagamore avenue and Revere street corner. The corner's sharp turn will be widened as the first step, with no further government action known on the congressionally referred bill.
Rev. John T. O'Brien of the Church of St. John the Evangelist hosts a Sunday gathering attended by about 800 Sunday school members on Lincoln Street. The weekly meeting features a celebration and community fellowship.
The many friends of Mrs. Phillip Larson will be glad to know that she is recovering and plans to attend upcoming community events. Local acquaintances report she is improving after a recent illness and thanks are extended to those who offered support.
A letter from Charles L. Underhill reports plans for a new Winthrop post office on the old Town Hall lot at Paul ine and Hermon streets. If bids are approved, a single story 15 by 40 foot building would be built set back 25 feet with a wide cement driveway, pending Post Office Department approval.
