Tax collector James C. Nelson announced demand notices and final notices were sent to all delinquent taxpayers for real estate motor excise and poll taxes. He states an 8 percent interest penalty and additional costs on unpaid taxes are retroactive to October 15 and will be assessed on all delinquent accounts.
At the Winthrop Golf Club annual dinner held Saturday evening at the clubhouse Warren E. Titus was elected president. Also chosen were G. Wallace Tibbetts as vice president Willard N. Hall as secretary Isaiah W. as treasurer and J. Frank Rebuck John H. Stevens and Thomas A. McLaughlin as trustees.
Rep. Underhill of Massachusetts calls for a constitutional amendment to repeal the 17th Amendment and return Senate selection to state legislatures. He says the direct popular election has proved a dismal failure and urges voters to consider the change.
Selectman Clancy stated he will seek re election in the upcoming March election. He is serving his first term, a longtime resident of the town for about seventeen years, and is active in the Winthrop Lodge of Elks Winthrop Council K of C and American Legion Post 146. He is married with one child and lives at 42 Emerson road.
Thomas E. McLaughlin of 28 Pebble Avenue Point Shirley received a farewell dinner Wednesday at the Boston City Club from the Advisory Committee Board of Selectmen and the Moderator. McLaughlin, longtime Winthrop civic leader, departs January 5 for Philadelphia to join Curtis Publishing Company home office. He was active in the local Golf Club. Our motto: To have been first proves only antiquity, to become first proves merit.
The Winthrop Boy Scout Council under J Frank Rebuck organizes a campaign to raise 3000 dollars this week. The drive, promoted with the slogan Help Support a Boy Scout for 1930, seeks broad community support and features a dedicated assisting corps.
Winthrop’s Community Christmas Tree sponsored by the Board of Trade nears completion under Charles R. Bennison and assistants in Metcalf Square. Festivities for the holidays are arranged around a 60 foot tree on the square island containing over 125 smaller trees.
Plans for a new post office at the old town hall site at Pauline and Winthrop streets have been submitted by the Board of Selectmen. The government will advertise for bids after plan acceptance, with construction to start in spring and the building ready for occupancy by early next fall.
The State Department of Public Utilities allowed the Boston Revere Beach and Lynn Railroad to issue 2652 additional shares of $100 par value, reducing the requested 4080 shares. The original petition sought funds to retire notes totaling $400,000 for completing road electrification.
