Phillip Thomas of 111 Hermon Street is a naval warrant officer and World War veteran serving as paymaster aboard a battleship stationed at Guam. Fred Witham of 6 Jefferson Street is a second Navy enlistment at a Honolulu shore station. Corporal John H. Merrill, 21, of the 65th Engineers at Fort Shafter, is preparing for West Point at the service preparatory school in Honolulu, son of Mr and Mrs John Merrill of 64 Winthrop Street.

FBI agents arrested a local man of Italian descent early Tuesday. He has long resided in the town and was taken into custody after agents found a complete radio transmitting set in the cellar of his house.

Plan for Auxiliary Firemen Training in Winthrop

Winthrop Fire Chief Bill Floyd directed the fire department to relocate the spraying machine from the Tree Department to the Water Department garage and train men in its use. The three hundred gallon capacity unit with two hundred feet of hose will be used to drive through town blowing sirens as a warning if an air raid threat appears. Floyd noted the transformer station for electric power lacked guards and announced plans to form an additional auxiliary fire force as soon as enough volunteers are ready.

Teachers Defense Course Opens Here in Winthrop

Superintendent Arth ur Boudreau says all Winthrop teachers will join a six week Junior Defense Course at Edward B. Newton School from 3:00 to 3:45 p m. The first class met Wednesday and next session is scheduled for December 17. Adults may attend. Teachers will later brief students on defense plans and air raid procedures for Boston area emergencies.

The Winthrop Civilian Defense Committee urgently calls women and men to register for ARP wardens first aid fire and police auxiliary service or any needed defense roles. About 1500 volunteers are anticipated. Registration hours are 9 AM to 5 PM at WPA Headquarters 34 Hermon Street with WPA Supervisor Wm Lindsey.

ARP Wardens Call for Meeting in Winthrop Town Hall

ARP wardens and citizens who finished ARP School in Winthrop or comparable courses in other towns are asked to meet in the Hearing Room at Winthrop Town Hall this Thursday evening December 11 at 8 00 p m. The meeting aims to arrange a skeleton force until local ARP organization proceeds. About 85 residents completed ARP schooling with 175 more finishing First Aid and a 50 member Auxiliary Fire Department under Jerry Wyman. no request yet for the latter units.
