Bowman Elected to Lead 1939 Winthrop High Football Eleven

The 1938 Winthrop High lettermen at a Hotel Manger banquet elected Robert John Bowman captain for the 1939 squad. Bowman, 16, weighs 178 and will lead the team with backs Jim Reid and Dick McGinn forming the nucleus. He is slated to play guard on basketball and possibly start on baseball next season. The event honored the 1938 squad, with 31 in attendance, and featured speeches, sports films, and entertainment including a song by Kev in Mulcahy.

Winthrop Knights Plan 25th Annual Retreat

Winthrop Council Knights of Columbus schedules its 25th annual weekend retreat at the Passionist Monastery in Brighton Massachusetts from Friday evening December 9 to Sunday December 11. Baraca Bowling League Opens 1938-39 season

The Baraca Class of First Baptist Church starts bowling Monday evening December 12 at Constitution Alleys Shirley Street with six teams modeled on National Hockey League names. On Tuesday November 29 the 33 girls from the Senior High School Office Practice class, led by Miss Johnson and Mrs Hurley, toured the Athenaeum Press in Cambridge. They observed printing stages from original copy to finished product, learned about linotype and monotype, and watched binding, stitching, and plate making.

Winthrop Catholic Woman's Club December Meeting

The Winthrop Catholic Woman's Club will hold a members only December meeting at St. John's Hall on Monday at 8:30 p.m. President Mrs. James H. Holland Jr. will preside. Set Aside Streets To Allow Coasting

Selectmen vote to set aside a list of streets for coasting under Street and Police Department supervision. Streets include Undine avenue from Triton to Grand View, Highland from Nahant to Sewall and Floyd to Sewall, Ocean View from Bowdoin to Cross, Marshall from Lincoln to Tileston, Birch from Circuit to Loring, Loring from Birch to Court, Almont from Cross to east, Bartlett from Orlando to Seymour. Motorists urged to slow and drive cautiously to protect children and others using streets for coasting.
