Selectmen Act To Prevent Speeding

The Selectmen instruct the Police Department to use all efforts to curb speeding on main thoroughfares including Winthrop Pleasant Revere Shirley River Main streets. They urge education of children bicyclists and warn that unheeded parents may face bicycle registration as in Lynn. Double parking on Shirley Street causes danger and steps will be taken to stop it.

New Improvements For Parish House

Substantial improvements are in progress in the kitchen of St. John's Episcopal Parish House. Completion is expected before St. John's Guild opening meeting later this month. Mrs. John E. Williams of 35 Willow Avenue chairs the improvement committee.

Yachtsmen Await Opening Gun Of Annual Three Day Regatta

Yachtsmen prepare for the start of the three day regatta as officials report the upcoming tax rate likely to stay at or below last year’s 27.60 per thousand valuation. The Board of Assessors says Friday will reveal the rate, with a possible slight reduction despite expectations of higher state taxes. Any town meeting expenditures before year end won’t alter the rate set Friday and would be carried to 1940.

Schools Here To Open Sept 6th

Announcement by Arthur E. Boudreau, superintendent, states all local public schools open Wednesday September 6. Elementary hours 8:45 a.m. Junior and Senior High begin 8:15 a.m. First grade registration for new students Sept 5 at the Senior High nurse’s office 9 a.m. to 12 noon.

Beach Credit Union Receives Charter

Beach Credit Union has received its charter from the state this week. It will be open each Monday evening at the Community Building in Shirley Street where applications for small loans will be accepted. Officers are Nat Goldberg president David Lavien vice president and Max Goldman treasurer.

Labor Day Yacht Regatta Opens at Winthrop Club

Winthrop Yacht Club hosts the annual Labor Day weekend regatta with the warning gun at 2 30 p m Saturday. The three day event features about 20 classes and hundreds of yachtsmen from Massachusetts Bay. Open house and a social program accompany racing as the highlight of the gathering.
