After a 72 hour hunt through Winthrop and Belle Isle Creek, the body of 4 year old Mildred Beale was found by Willard Appley while rowing with four children. The Beales, Mr. and Mrs. Frank A. Beale, mourned as authorities extended sympathy and funeral services were held at their Loring Road home.
John W. Herbert of 131 Circuit Rd is hospitalized at Baker Memorial after a fall Saturday evening on his front steps. He sustained a fractured skull and was listed in serious condition, later reported as satisfactory. Friends wish him a speedy recovery.
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Beale thank the local police auxiliary police firemen air raid wardens civilian defense officials Red Cross park department town officials Rhode Island State troopers Boy Scouts radio newspapers Coast guardsmen friends townspeople and all who assisted in the search for their missing daughter Mildred Beale along with the many expressions of sympathy and floral tributes received.
Mrs. Geo H Myrick is named Salvage Committee chairman with Mrs Ralph K Oxton as vice chair to mobilize several hundred women for homemaker involvement in government urged drives. They will work with George J Hamilton and seek volunteers across town to collect tins and fats with details to follow.
Jay R. Benton former Massachusetts attorney general and president of Boston Mutual Life Insurance has been named chairman of the Metropolitan Division for the 1942 43 Greater Boston Annual Maintenance Appeal of the Salvation Army. The campaign runs September 28 to November 7 and covers 37 towns including Arlington Belmont Brookline Newton and Woburn.
Patrick F Kirley of Winthrop Post No 146 has been elected a delegate to the American Legion National Convention in Kansas City. His leadership on the Suffolk County Council and the Yarn Committee effort to fund sweaters for servicemen highlight his service to veterans and families.
The Winthrop Woman's Club War Relief Committee hosted a beach party Sunday for soldiers at Fort Dawes. Activities included swimming games and a picnic lunch at the Highlands, followed by music and dancing at 9 Grovers Ave. Several young ladies led the event with help from Mrs. William Bradshaw and Mrs. John M. Milne.
Joseph F. O Hearn Jr a well known Winthrop resident was appointed town clerk by the Selectmen Town Treasurer and Moderator to fill the unexpired term of Donald McLeod who has joined the Navy He is president of the Chelsea Rotary Club and a member of the U S Chamber of Commerce residing at 96 Winthrop Street and has long served on the Advisory Committee aiding service men nearby.
The Navy, Army, and Marines need kitchen fats to manufacture explosives and glycerine for ships, hydraulic gear, depth charges, and other war materials. Save fats and sell them to the nearest meat market to aid the war effort.
Winthrop Selectman Arthur F Verney unveils a plan to place wooden donation boxes in about 15 town stores to fund weekly copies of The Winthrop Review mailed to servicemen. The project aims to provide news from home and strengthen letter writing to troops abroad and at home.
Local Salvage Committee chaired by George J Hamilton launched a town wide Junk Rally for late September to collect all scrap metal for war production. Citizens urged to search homes for iron and steel and deposit at school bins or via town trucks with proceeds donated to a local charity. A tin can drive and a house to house fats and greases campaign are also planned under women's division leadership.
The Board of Selectmen investigates non resident clam diggers on town flats amid food shortages and discusses permitting with the Division of Marine Fisheries. The town seeks authority to regulate clam taking for local residents at the upcoming town meeting.
