Rotary Club hears OPA price control talk

Louis T. Maloney, assistant to OPA District Price Officer Henry RK Lil berman, spoke to the Winthrop Rotary Club at Beacon Villa outlining that state price control aims to aid business and consumers, not punish infractions. He described the Price Control Division, 200 rationing boards, and 166 price panels, stressing enforcement rests with the public and that overcharges can be tripled or capped at 50 dollars by court action. He urged bringing problems to the State OPA office and answered Rotarians’ questions.

Winthrop Junior Circle Food Sale Planned

The newly formed Winthrop Junior Circle of the Florence Crit tenton League will hold its first food sale on Saturday August 28 at Winthrop Center. Silver Anniversary for Mr and Mrs James H Carrington

Anita B Carrington hosted a surprise party July 31 at 46 Bartlett Road Winthrop for her parents Mr and Mrs James H Carrington to mark 25 years of marriage. About 60 guests attended and gave silver pieces and cards. A midnight supper followed as the couple cut a three tier cake once decorated with their bridal ornament. Relatives from New York joined the celebration and a cake with a 25 on top was presented by Mrs Ralph Oxton.

Winthrop Scout Awards Eagle Scout Badge at Powow Camp

Assistant Scoutmaster Byron Zedros of Troop 73 earned the Eagle Scout badge at Camp Powow during a Sunday court of honor on August 1. Other honors went to Teddy Houseman and William Abbott, with First Class awards to Kenneth Kurland and Arnold Porter, and merit badges to Myles Marcus. The Powow program featured boating, swimming, nature, and camp activities as the two remaining weeks of camp proceed.

Phyllis Honan Visitors From Wright Field

Miss Phyllis Honan daughter of Col and Mrs John J Honan Wright Field Dayton Ohio returned home after a week in Winthrop She visited her aunts and uncles and recalled living here until about twelve years ago when her father moved to Cheyenne Wyoming and other posts She enjoyed dips in the Atlantic waters.

Selectman George J. Hamilton, chairman of the Salvage Committee, announced a tin can collection for Tuesday August 17. He praised Winthrop for ranking high among cities for collecting cans grease fats and silk stockings, noting the town’s size population and patriotism.

The Jewish War Veterans and its auxiliary hosted a dinner for 20 Harvard College soldiers last Sunday. Before the meal, swimming and other recreation were enjoyed and a group of hosts' girls assisted at the event.

Airport plans not to extend into Winthrop shores

Selectman George J. Hamilton announced the east Boston airport enlargement will not come closer than 3000 feet to Winthrop shores and no plans include taking any part of the town. A public hearing will be held in Winthrop before work starts, with engineers from the Department of Public Works explaining details.

Town Meeting to be Held Mid September

Plans by the Board of Selectmen call for a Special Town Meeting around the middle of September to consider several matters requiring approval. The session will include a vote to appropriate funds for repairs and maintenance of the Main Street bridge over Belle Isle Inlet.

Bridge Party Supports Soldiers Benefit at Milne Home

A successful bridge party at 9 Grovers Ave hosted by Mrs. John M. Milne raised funds for soldiers benefits. Mrs. Kate Payne and Mrs. R.
