The Winthrop Board of Health requested State Board of Health analysis of harbor side waters for public bathing. Tests show reasonable freedom from pollution, supporting safe use during summer heat.
A meeting in the Machine Gun Hall on Jefferson Street aims to form the Pico Beach Improvement Association with 100 nearby residents. William B Welton chairs pro tem. Edward J Cronin and Joseph J Monahan assist to plan improvements and a Waller carnival on September 10.
The Great Head sea wall to prevent hill erosion has caused water to collect behind it in large pools up to 200 feet long. Drains were buried and boulders placed to break waves, but water remains stagnant. Health officials had to cover the water to stop mosquito breeding, and crews dug trenches and removed boulders to begin relief efforts. The town may need catch basins at the base of the hill to drain future surpluses.
Winthrop Elks announce a family friendly basket picnic on August 20 at Centennial Grove Essex. Cars and buses depart the Elks Club House at ten in the morning for games and a communal lunch under the pine tree plus children's activities.
Marblehead week opens with 256 yachts under canvas and winds light. Eastern Yacht Club sailors face drifting markers, with many classes postponed to Sunday. Local Cottage Park and Winthrop crews post tight finishes in several races and Star and 15-Foot classes showcase close margins.
Local fans await a five game series between Winthrop Town Team and Ingalls A C to decide the better club after a season-long rivalry. First game is slated for August 19 with a second on August 26 and a Labor Day doubleheader, then a possible fifth game the following Saturday afternoon.
The town reports 2490 dollars received for beer licenses so far this year. Officials note tax revenue projections based on current license fees and taxable property assessments.
Merchants and business men are urged to attend a mass meeting at Odd Fellows Hall Pantine Street next Tuesday evening to learn about the National Recovery Act. John McMurray of the Winthrop Board of Trade organized the event to inform local businesses of the recovery program and cooperation with the administration. The meeting is open to all doing business in Winthrop and aims to rally support for the President’s recovery efforts.
