Under Superintendent T. J. Mahaney the Street Department completes seal-coat asphalt and pea stone on forty eight streets this year. The method offers a cleaner, longer lasting surface by sealing crevices and binding stone as the asphalt cools, reducing future repairs.

Legion Picnic Slated at Pleasant Pond Wenham

Winthrop Post 146 American Legion plans its third annual picnic at Pleasant Pond Wenham on Sunday August 13 with events including a rolling pin contest hog calling contest a bathing beauty contest and a ball game. Commander George W Downie and Chairman Jim Chambers lead the committee hoping for fair weather.

Cottage Park Yacht Club officers have landscaped the grounds around the clubhouse in Winthrop. A low white wall with painted steps, evergreen plantings, and white fences at the ends frame a large parking area. The result resembles a well kept country estate and reflects credit on officers, members, and the town.

Entries for Winthrop Playgrounds annual boys swimming meet are being received by Instructor Rock. The event, at Cook's Beach opposite Brook Bend Road, opens at 3 30 P M on Thursday August 10. Classes are Seniors Juniors Sub Juniors with Tug-of-War for Seniors vs Juniors. Events include 50 yard dash freestyle soap pole playground diving underwater freestyle row boat race boat battle and barrel rolling contest.

Town Receives 2944 Federal Funds For Tax Rate

The Board of Assessors reports a federal emergency relief allotment of 2944.65 for the first quarter to aid in fixing this year’s tax rate. A second grant will follow for welfare spending in April through June and also affect the rate. Delays persist as the Legislature session limits state tax data. Tax rate fixing is likely to be delayed at least three weeks.

Honan Family Sails on Thebaud Schooner

Representative Daniel J. Honan joined fellow legislators and his son John on a sail aboard the Schooner Gertrude L Thebaud, champion of the American fishing fleet. The vessel departed for the Century of Progress Exposition in Chicago as the official Massachusetts representative.
