First Army In War Games Aug. 17 31
The First Army will conduct field-training exercises from August 17 to 31 at three concentration areas. About 36 000 soldiers and officers participate under Major General Dennis E Nolan at Pine Camp New York with two corps training there. Editorial Staffs Take Fishing Trip From Winthrop
Two members of the Springfield Republican and Springfield Union staffs and friends fished off Winthrop shores Saturday led by Norman L. Corwin of The Republican. Bill Walsh city editor and his two daughters joined the group on Charlie Eskrigge’s boat beyond the Boston Light where waves disturbed some members but no one was injured. Frank F. Bauer Jr formerly of Winthrop and with Springfield Daily News could not go due to duties. Corwin has returned to The Republican after a stint in Cincinnati as a radio announcer.
