Winthrop Woman's Club Sets April Meetings

The Winthrop Woman's Club held a Friday session with President Mrs. Wendell A. Hodgkins presiding. Announced were upcoming events including Home Craft with Mrs. Preston L. Chase on April 6th and Current Topics at Beacon Villa on April 8th. Lit-Group No. 2 will meet April 12th with Mrs. Ralph K. Orton, and Garden Club meets April 5th at Beacon Villa hosted by Mrs. John W. Fielding. The Mothercraft class graduation is set for April 7th at Shirley Street School. Next meeting, chaired by Mrs. Sydney G. Packard, is Friday, April 16th, on "My Experiences in the War."

Interclub League Holds Annual Dinner and Awards

The Interclub Bowling League and the Junior League held their annual dinner at Highlands Yacht Club on Wednesday. Odd Fellows' team topped the Interclub standings with Highlands Yacht Club close behind, while Union Congregational Church led the Junior League with Odd Fellows Runner-up. Ted MacFarland welcomed guests and Fred Devereux acted as master of ceremonies. Full standings and individual honors will appear next week.

Popular Authors Hear Book Review in Beacon Villa Meeting

The Popular Authors Hear Book Review Literary Club met in Beacon Villa on Tuesday March 30 with Mrs Myra A Peters on 328 Pleasant Street as hostess. President Violet N Low welcomed members and guests and read the day’s quotation Serve and thou shalt be served. A paper on Dr Heisers Odyssey was given by Mrs Claire Gould praising its engaging style and adventurous scope. The group voted a donation to Winthrop Visiting Nurse Association in April canvass. Jane G Rogers signs off.

Guest Day at Winthrop Yacht Club

On April 5 over sixty five ladies attended a Ladies Auxiliary Guest Day at the Winthrop Yacht Club. Thirteen bridge tables and two bowling teams were set. Mrs Bertha Bearse led refreshments with assistants. Mrs Waterman welcomed guests. A groceries box went to Mrs Paul Swenson. High string winner was Mrs Byrnes with Mrs Dow second and Mrs Danahy third.

Mrs Mabel C Davison welcomes the Rangers at 31 Lincoln Street on April 1. President Elizabeth A Graham leads a business session with reports by Louise I Griffin and a Mars astronomy lesson by Martha L Eveleth. Topics cover Mercury visibility, zodiacal light, plant and garden topics, and hummingbird study.

Gas-Electric Rate Hearing Concludes After Six Months

Public Utilities Commission ended a six month long series of hearings in Re vere and Winthrop on electric rate reductions for Suburban Gas and Electric Company. Chairman Webber challenged the companys request for a return on going concern value, noting customers seek relief from high rates. Knight argued for a $500000 going concern value return, while the chair emphasized the franchise protected by the state prohibits competition.

Grant's Increases Wages for Store Employees

W. T. Grant Store management at Winthrop Centre announced an immediate pay raise for all staff. Increases range from 15 to 22 percent based on length of service.

Garden Club Holds April Meeting and Plant Talk

The Garden Club of the Winthrop Woman's Club met April 5 at Bea con Villa with Mrs. Melvin Colson presiding. Members discussed attending the Northeast Region meeting April 8 in Salem and the Boston flower show exhibit. A talk on plant propagation with questions followed and the next meeting will be May 3 at Mrs. Melvin Colson's home featuring Spring Gardens and an unusual plant exhibit.

Winthrop Woman's Club Holds Mothercraft Graduation

Graduation exercises for the Winthrop mothercraft class were held in Shirley Street School auditorium. Fifty eight girls trained by Mrs. Anne Borden Abbey received diplomas, distributed by club president Mrs. Wendell A. Hodgkins. Speakers included Mrs. S. Ernest Griffin and Edward R. Clarke.
